Important scam warning:
Scammers are actively using the CP53E notice to try to obtain sensitive information. Please keep the following in mind:
Only trust notices received via U.S. Mail.
Do not scan QR codes or click on links included in the notice.
Always navigate directly to IRS.gov rather than using any links provided.
We’re seeing reports that the IRS may have mistakenly issued Notice CP53E to some taxpayers who did not request a refund on their 2025 returns.
If you receive this notice unexpectedly, it is not automatically a cause for concern. This may simply be a system error.
If you owed a balance and have already paid it, and you see the payment successfully withdrawn from your account, no further action is required.
The notice is generally sent when a refund was approved but the direct deposit failed.
If applicable, log in to your IRS Online Account (you will need to create an account if you do not already have one) on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website to update your banking information. This must be done online—not by phone.
If no action is taken within 30 days, the IRS will typically issue a paper check.
If you have questions or would like us to review your situation, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.
