Fall is almost here, which means year-end will be here before we know it! September is a great time to check in on your finances and take care of a few important planning items before the holiday season gets busy.
🍁 Review your beneficiaries. Check the beneficiary designations on your retirement and investment accounts and make sure they still reflect your wishes.
🍁 Check your bank accounts. If appropriate, consider adding a Payable on Death (POD) or Transfer on Death (TOD) designation to help simplify how assets pass to your intended beneficiaries.
🍁 Give your investments a checkup. Review your 401(k) or 403(b) contributions and determine whether you're on track to maximize your contributions for the year. It's also a good time to see whether market movements have shifted your portfolio away from your target allocation and rebalancing may be appropriate.
🍁 Prepare for quarterly taxes. If you make estimated tax payments, mark October 15 on your calendar and make sure you have the cash available for your upcoming payment.
🍁 Start budgeting for the holidays. Estimate what you expect to spend on gifts, travel, entertaining, and other holiday expenses now so they don't become an unwelcome surprise later.
🍁 Plan your year-end giving. If charitable giving is part of your plans, start thinking about your strategy now. Depending on your circumstances, charitable contributions may also provide valuable tax benefits.
A little planning this fall can make for a much smoother end to the year.
