Many people create beneficiary designations when they open a retirement account, life insurance policy, or investment account, then rarely look at them again.

However, major life events can change your intentions over time, including:

✅ Marriage or divorce
✅ The birth of a child or grandchild
✅ The loss of a loved one
✅ Changes in your estate planning goals
✅ Retirement or other major life transitions

Keeping your beneficiaries up to date can help ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes and can help reduce unnecessary complications for your loved ones.

A beneficiary review doesn't take long, but it can be an important part of maintaining your overall financial plan.

Preparing for maternity leave? Start by finding out exactly how much of your regular pay you'll receive and for how long.

Once you know the numbers, compare the reduced income with your expected expenses, including medical bills, childcare deposits, baby supplies, and your usual monthly costs.

Look for expenses you can temporarily reduce and consider building up extra savings before your leave begins.

Planning ahead can help you spend more time focusing on your growing family and less time worrying about your next paycheck.

Many parents want to do everything they can to help their children pay for college. While supporting your child's education is a meaningful goal, it's important not to lose sight of your own retirement plans.

Remember: there are many ways to fund an education, including scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and student loans. There are far fewer options available to fund retirement.

As you plan for both goals, consider:
✅ Prioritizing contributions to retirement accounts
✅ Creating a realistic college savings strategy
✅ Exploring 529 plans and other education savings options
✅ Reviewing your overall financial goals regularly
✅ Striking a balance between supporting your children and protecting your future

Helping your children succeed is important, but so is ensuring your long-term financial security. A well-balanced plan can help you work toward both goals with confidence.

If one spouse doesn't have earned income, they might assume they can't contribute to an IRA.

A spousal IRA lets a working spouse contribute to an IRA on behalf of a non-working (or lower-earning) spouse, as long as the couple files jointly and has enough combined earned income to cover both contributions.

It's a simple way to keep both partners building retirement savings, even when only one paycheck is coming in.

Staying home with kids doesn't mean retirement planning has to pause. A few ways stay-at-home parents can keep building toward retirement:

• Spousal IRA contributions
• Tracking Social Security spousal benefits
• Staying looped in on any employer retirement accounts from a working spouse

Retirement planning works best when it accounts for the whole household, not just the person with a paycheck.

Social Security is a decision, not just a birthday.

You may be eligible to begin receiving retirement benefits at 62, but that doesn't automatically mean it's the right time to claim.

Before deciding, consider your income needs, health, life expectancy, employment plans, spouse's benefits, taxes, and other retirement assets.

The right claiming age is personal. It should support your broader retirement plan, not simply follow the calendar.
