The Niagara County Sheriff's Office reminds everyone not to fall prey to criminals who offer you refunds. The Economic Impact Payment scam is not new, but we are seeing an increase in the amount of text messages being sent. Do not respond to these scammers and do not click on any links sent to you. With many W-2's issued this month and tax filing season around the corner - be on the lookout for scams. To avoid becoming a victim of an IRS scam, residents are encouraged to remember the following:
- If you owe back taxes, the IRS will contact you by mail, and not by phone, email or social media.
- The IRS never requests personal or financial information by email, text or social media. (The IRS says it has no way to text people.)
- The IRS does not leave prerecorded or urgent voicemails.
- The IRS will not ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card, gift cards, a money order or wire transfer.
- The IRS will not ask for a credit card number over the phone.
