This weekend was about supporting Local businesses, making memories, a scenery change, puppy bonding and celebrating 250 years of our countries Freedom.

Along the way we met some pretty special people and made some connections that I believe will last far beyond our mini vacation.

While out for an early morning walk with Sonny. I met a grandma with her two beautiful twin granddaughters. She lost her husband a year ago and we bonded over her being his caregiver. Her two granddaughters immediately fell in love with Sonny and did me a huge favor and tired him out well into the afternoon on Saturday. She was so thankful for the jar opener that I left by her pool chair that promotes my business. She couldn't thank me enough when I saw her the next morning since arthritis has reduced her strength in her hands. We left looking forward to seeing each other next year.

While in the pool I met a couple who used to live in Yorktown but moved about 30 minutes away recently. They were expecting their son, daughter and son-in-law to arrive and hang out for the day. While I was speaking to her husband in the pool about the usual getting to know you chit chat, she came in and asked me how I got clients. It turns out that she is a CFO/CPA and trying to help her daughter figure out how she could be a stay-at-home mom yet earn some income. She feels that she would be a great bookkeeper and with the bonus of the CFO/CPA Mom, she could bounce questions and get advice from her. She asked me to mention what I do and how I got started to her daughter and I promised that I would send information about the course that I used to get my start. My husband and I received an invite to attend gathering of friends at their home later this month.

I met an older couple who had a little panic situation due to an update on their iPhone. It seems that Walter has his diabetes monitor hooked up to his cell phone. When they woke up, the phones had gone through an update and disconnected them from the hotels of Wi-Fi. He was in a panic situation because he couldn't check his sugar and she did not know the code to his phone to open it up so someone could help her get it reconnected. I happened to bring John's monitor with me and was able to help them get a reading on his sugar and relax a bit so he could remember the code to open up his phone. Connie is a children's book author who is working on her fourth book. She loved the name of my business because people call her Queen B. I couldn't resist bringing her a t-shirt, a jar opener, and a couple pens which really thrilled both of them. We had a nice 30 or 40 minute chat and planned to meet soon for lunch since they live local as well.

We had a late lunch on Friday when we arrived with some delicious food I picked up from Yorktown Pub. The morning of the 4th, just before the parade I placed a pickup order at Coastal Thirst next door for some breakfast sandwiches for John and I. Heading out today, I couldn't resist placing a pickup order for some Nathan's footlong corn dogs that I saw advertised by The Kitchen at Virginia Beer Company. They definitely did not disappoint.

When I started my business I purposely named it Queen B Small Business Solutions opposed to Queen B Bookkeeping because I honestly didn't know how many different ways I could help people. This weekend fortified that I chose the right name and that I continue to be blessed as I go through this journey.

Small Business owners are people too! Spot on!

Blue collar is not Amazon Prime.

We as humans have become so accustomed to the click-and-deliver world that we forget people aren’t a commodity.

My wife saw a post on Sunday asking if anyone knew a cheap landscaper who could come mulch their house that same day.

Think about that for a second.

People have no problem paying for the best doctor.
The nicest car.
The expensive purse.
The newest phone.

But when it comes to the people who actually keep this country running?

They want the cheapest plumber.
The electrician that “doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.”
The daycare that’s “just babysitting anyways.”
The landscaper who can drop everything on a Sunday and work for next to nothing.

Blue-collar workers are human beings.
They have families.
Ball games.
Cookouts.
Birthdays.
Exhaustion.
Bills.
Dreams.

And most of them built their skill through years of sacrifice, mistakes, experience, licensing, injuries, overtime, and showing up when nobody else would.

You’re not paying for someone to “just install an outlet.”
You’re paying for the years it took them to know how to do it safely, correctly, and confidently.

We can’t preach support local while treating skilled labor like it should be instant, cheap, and disposable.

Respect the people who build, fix, wire, repair, raise, teach, clean, deliver, and show up every single day.
