IRS Moves 2020 Tax Filing Deadline

The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced on March 17, 2021 that the 2020 tax filing deadline will be extended from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. This change is automatic and does not require you to take additional steps. The deadline to pay your 2020 tax liability has also been extended to May 17, 2021. Please note this extension to pay does not apply to estimated payments for the 2021 tax year.

Last night the IRS issued Notice 2020-18 which changes the filing deadline from 4/15/2020 to 7/15/2020. This matches the previous payment deadline change. This is only for tax year 2019 filings.

The IRS has issued Notice 2020-17 which officially extends the date to pay any federal income tax due from 4/15 to 7/15.

Today, Treasury Secretary Mnuchin announced a 90-day extension to pay (not an extension to file) your tax bill from 4/15 to 7/15 without incurring penalty or interest. There was no change made to the filing deadline of 4/15.
