“I thought if I couldn't PAY the taxes...
I wasn't supposed to FILE the taxes.”😬
Listen.
If I had a dollar for every time I've heard some version of this...
I could probably pay somebody's taxes.😂
This is one of those beliefs that sounds completely logical.
You finish the return.
It says you owe $12,000.
You look at your bank account.
Your bank account looks back at you.
👀
Neither one of y'all has $12,000.
So your brain says:
“Well...
I guess we can't file this.”
Filing the return and paying the balance are two separate things.
Not having all the money doesn't mean you should leave the return sitting there indefinitely.
Because now we potentially have TWO problems:
The money you owe.
AND an unfiled tax return.
And depending on the situation, filing late can add additional penalties on top of a balance that was already difficult to pay.
That's how people sometimes end up years behind.
Not because they're irresponsible.
They simply didn't know what to do next.
So they did...
nothing.
And unfortunately, “nothing” is not one of the IRS payment options.😂
If you can't pay everything you owe, the answer isn't necessarily to hide from the return.
File what needs to be filed.
Find out what you actually owe.
Then figure out what resolution or payment options may be available based on your situation.
One problem at a time.
