Last week, we hosted our 6th Annual Business Owner Excellence Workshop in Atlanta.

One of the best parts of the day was seeing different owners walk away with very different conclusions.

For one, the right answer may be to continue building for another decade. For another, it may mean preparing for an eventual sale. For someone else, it may mean preserving independence and keeping the business in the family.

That is exactly how it should be.

Good exit planning is not about convincing an owner to sell. It is about helping them understand their options, prepare personally and financially, and make the decision that is right for their business, family, and future.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us and trusted us with the conversation.

After years of sitting with owners before, during, and after business transitions, I keep coming back to one idea:

The owner should control the clock.

Most business owners are very prepared to run and grow their companies. Far fewer are prepared for the moment someone wants to buy one.

That is why I wrote Before the Offer: The Business Owner's Exit Readiness Blueprint.

This is not about pushing owners toward a sale. It is about helping them create clarity before an unsolicited offer, LOI, deadline, health event, partner issue, or simple fatigue starts controlling the decisions.

The whitepaper walks through five areas of readiness:

Personal
Financial
Business
Tax, estate, and legacy
Deal ex*****on

It also includes a 15-question assessment owners can use before a process begins. https://www.raymondjamesconnect.com/aNCDl1

Good planning is not about removing every risk.

It is about deciding which risks are worth taking without putting the family's independence at risk.

A strong plan protects the freedom to pursue the right opportunities.

A business sale affects far more than the business.

It touches taxes, estate planning, investments, family decisions, liquidity, and the owner's future role.

Great advisors are important. Great advisors who are working together are even more valuable.

Most business owners do not need another advisor.

They need their advisors working together.

Tax. Estate planning. Lending. Investments. M&A. Insurance. Family.

The owner should not be responsible for carrying information between everyone.

One team. One coordinated plan. One financial quarterback.

Preparing a business for a future transaction is not only about growing revenue.

Buyers also look closely at:

• Customer concentration
• The strength of the management team
• The quality of the financial reporting

Improving these areas can create more confidence, more options, and a cleaner process.

The wrong time to fix them is after diligence begins.

Most owners naturally want to know what their business is worth.

But price alone does not define a successful outcome.

Before a process begins, an owner should understand what the transaction needs to accomplish for the family, the future, and life after the business.

The offer matters. What the offer makes possible matters more.

One of the first questions business owners ask is:

"What is my company worth?"

It is an important question, but it is rarely the best place to begin.

The better first question is:

What does the transaction need to make possible?

Does the owner want a complete exit or partial liquidity?

How much capital is needed to create lasting financial independence?

How long is the owner willing to remain involved?

What needs to be protected for employees, family and the next chapter?

A valuation is only meaningful when it is connected to a clearly defined outcome.

The strongest planning begins with the owner and works backward to the transaction.
