Think you need a college degree to become an IRS Enrolled Agent? You don’t. You can qualify by passing a three-part exam—or through certain IRS work experience—and the credential allows you to represent taxpayers before the IRS nationwide. But passing the exam is only part of the journey: there’s also an application review and ongoing education to maintain your status. Which route could be right for you?

Accurate W-2 Reporting Is Required to Deduct 2026 Overtime – Did You Know?

Eligible taxpayers may deduct up to $12,500 of qualified overtime compensation ($25,000 for joint filers) on their 2026 federal income tax returns without itemizing. The deduction begins phasing out when modified adjusted gross income exceeds $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers). Married taxpayers generally must file jointly. Qualified overtime generally means the “half” portion of time-and-a-half pay required under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Social Security and Medicare taxes still generally apply.

For 2026, employers must report qualified overtime on Form W-2 in box 12 using code “TT.” If the amount is missing or incorrect, contact your employer and keep supporting pay stubs handy. Be sure to obtain a corrected Form W-2c (Corrected Wage and Tax Statement) if your employer omitted or incorrectly reported your qualified overtime pay.

The Senate just passed the Taxpayer Assistance and Service (TAS) Act.

65 provisions aimed at modernizing the IRS: better online account tools, more digital access to your records, more visibility into processing backlogs, and new measures against abusive tax prep practices.

But passage isn’t law. The bill still needs the House and the President’s signature before any of this takes effect.

We’ll keep you posted as it moves. For now: watch the process, not the headlines.

📌 Save this for tax season. Follow for more updates as this develops.

Many taxpayers are surprised to learn that an Enrolled Agent can represent them before any IRS office and handle virtually any type of tax matter—from audits to appeals and collection actions. EAs must also complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years, but their expertise differs from that of CPAs and tax attorneys. So which professional is the right fit for your IRS situation?

If your preparer won’t sign your return, that’s not a shortcut. That’s a red flag.

A “ghost preparer” takes your money, prepares your return, then leaves their name off it. If anything goes wrong, you’re the one answering for it alone.

The IRS requires anyone paid to prepare a return to sign it and include their PTIN. No exceptions.

Before you hand over your documents: will they sign it? If the answer isn’t an immediate yes, walk away.

An IRS payment pause or installment plan can provide breathing room—but neither automatically erases your tax debt, and interest may keep adding up. Before paying for professional help, you can use IRS tools and free assistance to review your account and explore options like Currently Not Collectible status or an offer in compromise. Which path might fit your finances?

An IRS debt solution isn’t always about paying less right away. If paying now would leave you unable to cover basic expenses, you may qualify for a temporary pause in collection—but the debt doesn’t disappear, and your finances may change. The right strategy depends on what you can afford and what the IRS could collect, so which option might fit your situation?

Think setting up an IRS payment plan freezes your tax bill in place? Surprisingly, interest and late penalties can quietly keep stacking up even while you make your monthly payments. While specific options like a 180-day payoff for balances under $100,000 exist, knowing how one simple filing detail secretly controls those extra charges can make all the difference before you commit.

An EA is licensed at the federal level, which means I can represent you before the IRS in any state, on any tax matter.

Most preparers can’t say that.

Dealing with a notice, an audit, or a balance you owe?

Ask whoever you’re working with one question: are you actually licensed to represent me before the IRS?

General information only, not advice for your specific situation.
