Reviewing your Medicare coverage during Open Enrollment? Don't forget to review your costs, too.

Many people with Medicare are paying more than they need to because they don't realize help may be available.

Programs such as Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help can assist with Medicare premiums, deductibles, copays, and prescription drug costs.

Even if you've checked before, it's worth looking again. Some income and assets may not count toward eligibility, and many people qualify when they didn't expect to.

You can also use NCOA's BenefitsCheckUp to see whether you may qualify for programs that help with healthcare, prescriptions, food, utilities, and other everyday expenses.

During Open Enrollment, a quick eligibility check could potentially save hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year.

Before assuming you won't qualify, contact your local SHIP for free, unbiased help understanding programs that may lower your Medicare costs.

Learn more about BenefitsCheckUp and find your local SHIP in the comments.

💬 Have you or someone you know ever been surprised to learn they qualified for help with Medicare costs?

GETTING ORGANIZED: DOCUMENTS & FINANCIAL RECORDS

“Good information can make a difficult process easier.” 💛

When a loved one begins needing help with financial or legal matters, one of the most helpful things a family can do is get organized.

Important information can be difficult to find when a family is already dealing with a stressful situation. Having records gathered ahead of time can help make the process more organized and efficient.

📋 Consider keeping track of:

🏦 Bank and investment accounts
🏠 Real estate ownership information
📄 Important legal documents
🪪 Birth certificates and other personal records
📑 Documents related to adoption, divorce, or other legal matters

The Taking Control guide recommends preparing as complete an inventory of assets as possible, including bank accounts, investments, bonds, and real estate ownership.

🌿 A simple place to start:

You don't have to organize everything in one day. Start with one folder, one list, or one conversation with your loved one.

Ask:

“What important information would our family need if you ever needed help managing your affairs?”

Planning ahead can help reduce confusion later—and it gives families an opportunity to have these conversations while there is still time to prepare.

❤️ Don't wait for a crisis to start gathering important information.

🌺 WHEN FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION IS A CONCERN

“Protecting a loved one starts with paying attention.” 💛

Sometimes, changes in the way a loved one handles money can raise concerns.

You might notice:

💵 Unusual spending
📬 Money being sent to unfamiliar people or organizations
🏦 Missing funds or unexplained transactions
📄 Important financial documents being misplaced
🤔 Changes in how they manage their financial affairs

One unusual event does not automatically mean someone is being exploited. But changes that concern you deserve attention.

🌿 What can you do?

Start by calmly documenting what you are noticing. Talk with your loved one when appropriate, and seek guidance from qualified professionals who can help you understand what steps may be appropriate.

If you suspect that someone is being financially or legally exploited or abused, the Taking Control guide recommends contacting Adult Protective Services (APS) in your area and filing a report.

And remember: you do not necessarily have to become a guardian or conservator yourself. There may be professionals and agencies that can help assess the situation and determine appropriate next steps.

❤️ Don't wait for a crisis. Pay attention, document concerns, and ask for help when you need it.

🌺 Care with Aloha: Protecting a loved one begins with noticing when something doesn't seem right—and responding with care.
