Reconciliation is crucial in the bookkeeping process, and is where bookkeepers help catch fraud, overcharged transactions, and generally makes sure that you know how much money you truly have.

Reconciling on a regular basis, usually monthly, is an essential habit to have for your small business. Not reconciling regularly is like taking a road trip without knowing how much gas is in your tank.

Term #2 of our Accounting Terminology Info Series is... Chart of Accounts!

The chart of accounts (CoA) is key to understanding how your business is structured. Some tips for using the chart of accounts:

1) Familiarize yourself with your CoA on your accounting software and make sure that it makes sense to you - if it doesn't, the financial reports you receive may be hard to use effectively.

2) Check your CoA frequently to make sure that you agree with where your bookkeeper is sorting transactions. They will be able to explain why a transaction belongs there or adjust according to your feedback, and you'll have a clearer picture of your business.

3) When you're making significant changes to your business, like offering a new service and hiring new employees for it, let your bookkeeper know so we can collaborate how to reflect the changes in your CoA.
