Tapestryfp

Tapestryfp Seeking financial advice starts with a numbers based question. But ultimately, you're trying to answer deep questions. Are we okay? Can we do this?

Are we making good decisions? At TapestryFP, we talk about “Weaving Wealth with Meaning.”

08/31/2026

You probably have a few financial questions you've been meaning to get to.

• Do we have enough to replace the roof?
• Should we pay off our mortgage early?
• How do we pay for college?
• Which debt should I pay off first?
• We value being generous, but how do we afford that?
• Can I make a career move without blowing things up?
• My parents are getting older. What do I do when they need help?

What usually happens with these is nothing. Not a wrong decision, just no decision.

You keep paying on the debt month after month, still feeling squeezed. You keep contributing the same amount you've been contributing for the last 10 years. You don't change the investment selections. You don't put money away for that expense you know is coming.

The status quo is the path of least resistance. It feels safer than doing something different.

That's understandable. It's hard to commit to a decision when you can't see what it means.

What changes things is seeing it all in one place. Your income, savings, investments, taxes, and insurance, and how a decision in one area tips a domino in a different area.

Once you can see that, the options crystallize and the tradeoffs get a lot clearer. You can tell how prepaying the mortgage affects your retirement date, and how much fun you can have in between now and then.

That's the bulk of what we do for families.

If you've got a list of questions like this, we'd love to help you work through it.

What is your money actually for?

Americans are richer than they have ever been and unhappier than they have been in fifty years.

Derek Thompson recently wrote about this (link in comments). Self-reported happiness fell sharply after 2020 and has stayed there.

What stands out is who it happened to.

The decline hit nearly every demographic at roughly the same rate. Rising net worth didn't shield you.

A financial plan will not fix a national mood, but it can help answer the question all of this keeps raising: What is your money actually for?

Weaving Wealth with Meaning is our belief that money is a tool for building a life that is intentional, intricate, sometimes painful, and beautiful. Every financial decision becomes a thread. Over time those threads form a tapestry that either reflects what you actually care about or reflects nothing in particular.

We ask every client four simple question to get at this:

1. What are the rules you live by?
2. Who is important to you?
3. Who are you becoming?
4. What mission are you on?

The answers become your Tapestry Statement, and we use it to guide every financial decision that follows. It is not fixed. It grows as you do, and only in looking back do you see how it came together.

An identity rooted in the tapestry you are creating rather than in what you own turns out to be more durable than a big balance sheet.

A draining job does not stay contained to the office.

It shows up as burnout, as being critical of your boss and the people you work with, and the realization that the work isn't meaningful anymore. You come home and complain about the same things you complained about last week. You daydream about doing something else, but underneath the hood is the fear of making a change.

Some people in that spot have already decided to leave and are looking for someone to tell them it's going to be alright. Others have decided it is impossible and seemingly avoid looking at the numbers in case that's true.

Both have identity and financial questions they have trouble putting into words.

What will people think if I leave?

What would it actually take to make a change?

What will we do about health insurance?

These are answerable questions, and when you dig into the answers and get them "on paper", the vague dread diminishes.

Sometimes the plan shows you are closer than you thought. Sometimes it shows you need time to prepare.

If you're experiencing anything like this, we would love to encourage you through it and help you formulate a plan of attack.

What if you could get financial planning, investment management, AND your tax return prepared all for one flat fee you could see upfront?

For some people, that sounds almost too good to be true. Others have never heard of it. And some assume a percentage-based fee is better because it incentivizes the advisor to grow their investments.

Here's the reality: the financial advice industry commonly charges 1% of assets under management (AUM). On a $500,000 portfolio, that's $5,000/year. On $1,000,000, it doubles to $10,000, even if the work they do for you stays exactly the same.

At TapestryFP, we believe your fee should reflect the complexity of your situation and the scope of work we do and not the size of your investment account. We charge a single, clearly stated flat fee in dollars. It doesn't fluctuate with market swings or portfolio growth.

Our Core service, which includes financial planning, investment management, tax planning, and tax return preparation, is $8,400/year for individuals and $9,600/year for couples. You always know exactly what you're paying, and we're never incentivized to recommend strategies based on what grows our revenue.

We like to say it this way: "You do better when you do better."

How much can you safely pull from your portfolio each year without running out?

It turns out the answer depends on how you balance each of the five retirement income trade-offs: maximized spending, leaving a legacy, simplicity, willingness to adjust, and protection from bad timing.

Here are the ones I find noteworthy:

• The 4% rule. The famous number everyone quotes. Handy as a rough starting point, though it was never built to run your actual retirement.

• The RMD method. Let your age and your current balance set your paycheck each year, borrowing the same life-expectancy math the IRS uses for required minimum distributions.

• A gradual spending decline. Plan for what usually happens in real life, where spending is highest early and tapers later, so you can enjoy bigger checks in your go-go years.

• Guardrails. Set a target rate with a lane on each side. Give yourself a raise when markets are generous and ease off when they are not.

• Living off what your portfolio produces. Run your nest egg like a business, where dividends and interest become your salary and strong years earn a bonus.

In our latest blog post, I show you an example of how each one is calculated and compare them side by side on the basis of the five retirement income trade-offs.

Curious which fits your retirement goals best?

Every retirement plan runs into one hard question: how much can you actually spend, and how do you make it last? Here are the strategies that answer it, with worked examples so you better understand how each is calculated, and how to pick the one that fits your life.

Not everyone needs a financial advisor.

Some people manage their money perfectly well on their own. Others benefit enormously from professional guidance. And plenty of people who do hire an advisor don't need one in an ongoing way, especially if they can stick to a plan on their own.

The real question is whether professional advice actually leads to better decisions and financial behaviors than you'd make on your own.

You're probably fine handling things yourself if:

• Your financial situation is straightforward
• You're saving consistently because you're living on less than you make
• You understand the basics of investing and taxes
• You're not losing sleep over money decisions

Professional guidance tends to be worth it when:

• You're facing a major transition (marriage, kids, career change, retirement, etc.)
• Your time is worth more than the hours it would take to handle your own planning
• You're stuck with "am I doing this right" stress
• You make emotional money decisions when markets get rocky

It's also worth understanding how advisors get paid. Most charge a percentage of your assets. Some earn commissions on products they sell. Some, like us, charge a flat fee that doesn't change based on portfolio size or performance but is based on complexity.

Financial advice is a tool, not a requirement. If you're confident and organized, you may not need one right now. If you're facing a big decision, guidance can be genuinely valuable.

Debt has become so normal that most people never stop to ask whether it is actually necessary. You are even made to feel foolish for not maximizing credit card rewards, or told that financing or leasing a car is just what you do.

At TapestryFP, we have a genuine bias toward debt-free living. We have seen what freedom from debt makes possible. It opens up options, reduces stress, and gives you the ability to take measured risks that align with your real vision for your life.

Our culture has bought into the idea that debt is just part of life. Many people cannot imagine living any other way.

Consider also how much messaging is built around optimizing a credit score. A high score is treated like a financial achievement, when really it is a measure of how well you manage borrowed money.

We would rather help you build wealth than help you become better at debt.

We are straightforward about who we work best with. If you are looking to finance your lifestyle, we are probably not the right fit. But if you are debt-free, or serious about getting there, we want to help you build from that foundation.

Whether you are already debt-free or somewhere on the journey, we would love to have a conversation.

Most people experience taxes once a year. We think about our clients' all year long.

For most families, tax season means gathering documents, handing them to a preparer, and hoping for the best. The return gets filed, and taxes don't get touched again until next April. The problem is that by the time you are gathering documents, most of the decisions that affect your tax bill have already been made.

At TapestryFP, tax planning is woven into everything we do. That means running projections at year end for the coming year, checking in mid-year to make adjustments, and crunching the real numbers at year-end while considering moves like realizing capital gains, making charitable donations, and evaluating Roth conversions. We also make sure you are on track with withholdings and estimated tax payments throughout the year, so there are no surprises when you file.

Most clients we work with either do not have a clear picture of how their full financial life translates to their tax return, or they have not had someone tracking all their tax moves in one place. We offer both of those things.

Because we are doing the planning work all year, tax preparation becomes a natural conclusion. We already understand your full financial picture, we know what documents you need, and we have been tracking it all. Filing your return is the final step of a process we have been doing together all year long.

We include tax return preparation in our Core and Legacy tiers and as an optional add-on for our Foundations offering.

Generosity is personal. For many of our clients, it is also a core conviction. At TapestryFP, it is one of ours too.

We make generosity a deliberate part of the planning conversation, not something to glance over or move past quickly. For us, it belongs at the table alongside retirement projections and tax strategy.

That looks different for every client. It might mean giving to a charity or church. It might mean helping your kids or grandkids financially while you are still here to see it. It might mean random acts of kindness or supporting someone going through a hard season. The formula looks different for everyone.

What we do is help you give intentionally and, where it makes sense, tax efficiently. The tax advantages are real, but they are not the point. The point is that your money has a purpose beyond a statement balance. Practically, that can include donor advised funds, gifting appreciated securities, qualified charitable distributions from an IRA, or more structured vehicles like trusts.

We also have honest conversations about giving that go deeper than the numbers. Some clients wrestle with tithing, convinced they cannot afford it. We like to work through that together. Others want to think through what the Bible says about giving freely, without guilt or obligation. The Apostle Paul put it simply: each person should give what they have decided in their heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion.

We are probably not the right fit for everyone. But if a spirit of generosity is part of who you are, or who you want to become, we would love to be part of that conversation.

Not every financial advisor is required to act in your best interest. Here is what that means for you.

The financial advice world is full of titles: financial advisor, financial consultant, wealth manager, retirement specialist. Some of these professionals are fiduciaries. Many are not. Some earn commissions selling the products they recommend, whether that is a life insurance policy, an annuity, or a mutual fund. That is not automatically bad, but it is worth knowing.

The simplest question you can ask any advisor is this: "Are you a fiduciary, and are you always required to act in my best interest?" If the answer is anything other than a clear yes, you have your answer.

Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), like TapestryFP, are held to the fiduciary standard by law. They are required to put your interests first, always.

At TapestryFP, we are an independent RIA. That independence matters because we have no corporate parent, no products to push, and no financial incentives tied to what we recommend. We are free to look across all of your available options and give you advice that is genuinely in your best interest. We believe that is simply the right way to do this work.

Our advisors who are CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals are also held to the CFP Board's code of ethics and standards of conduct, which applies a fiduciary standard across all financial planning services.

Independence also shapes the practical side of how we work. We have no account minimums, and none of your assets move to our management until you are ready. There is no pressure and no incentive on our end to move faster than makes sense for you.
