Trump launches child investment accounts with Wall Street opening bell ceremony
President Donald Trump marked the launch of the new Trump accounts by ringing the opening bells of both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq from the White House, describing the government-backed savings initiative as a way to help build wealth for American children. The tax-advantaged accounts, which officially launched on July 4th, provide a $1,000 government contribution for eligible children born between 2025 and 2028, with additional contributions from corporations, philanthropists, and individuals. The event featured senior executives from the NYSE, Nasdaq, and several major companies, alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Mr. Trump said approximately $800m in new capital would be invested through the program during its first week. Mr. Trump also used the ceremony to highlight his economic agenda ahead of the midterm elections, suggesting the program could eventually be expanded by drawing on elements of Australia's retirement savings system. Initial investments in the accounts will be directed into the State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF, with additional investment options from firms including BlackRock and Vanguard available later.
