“Rocking these braids like a queen.” A black girl and her braids is nothing to play with.

This is the first time that I wore braids for a professional headshot. I typically wear more conservative hairstyles for professional photos, but it feels good to step outside of my comfortable zone!!! I also had the nose ring in! I might color to my hair next time lol!!!!

I wanted to share some exciting news. I will be appearing on Fox 5 DC tomorrow to discuss Maryland House Bill 1149, which passed on the final day of the legislative session.

For context, individuals and business owners with tax liabilities or other debts owed to Maryland must be in arrears for at least two years before becoming eligible for an offer in compromise—a program that allows settlement of debt when full repayment would create a financial hardship.

Last June, I published an op-ed in the Baltimore Sun identifying the problem and proposing a concrete policy fix to remove the two-year waiting period. In January 2026, Maryland lawmakers reached out to me, and HB 1149 was introduced to implement the reform I had proposed. The bill earned bipartisan cosponsors and overwhelming support throughout the legislative process, with amendments that narrowed the reform to business taxpayers only.

Now that the bill has passed, business owners who cease operations will no longer have to wait two years before settling their tax debts. This is a meaningful step toward a fairer and more accessible system, but there is still more work to do.

As we get closer to the April 15th tax deadline, I wanted to share my op-ed, “Why the Tax System No Longer Works for Americans” that was published on February 28th in the Baltimore Sun.

In this piece, I argue that the Current Tax Payment Act of 1943, which introduced the W-4 Form, does not account for today’s workforce. In 1943, the average weekly wage was $41.25; today it is $1,204. Dual-income households are more common, and many workers hold multiple jobs. A withholding system designed for the mid-20th century workforce is not sustainable in a 21st century economy built on multiple income streams and fluctuating earnings. Until the withholding process is made simpler, taxpayers must approach it as a year-round tax planning, not an April afterthought.

I was inspired to write this piece after having a conversation with a family member about tax withholdings.

Today was the first of many! I got a chance to visit the Maryland House of Delegates and presented oral testimony in support of House Bill 1149. The bill will remove the two year waiting period to request a Maryland Offer in Compromise. This program allows taxpayers to settle their debt for less than what is owed. This can encourage compliance, reduces administration inefficiency, advances fairness, and prevents unnecessary debt escalation.

To think, this all started from my Op-ed that I published last June.

Thank you, Delegate Caylin Young for making this happen!
