This is the type of notice that every taxpayer is terrified of getting...

But I'm here to teach you that getting an audit notice isn't the end of the world. πŸ™‚β€β†”οΈ

This type of notice is actually pretty straightforward!

It lets you know exactly what area of your tax return the IRS is looking at + what documentation they expect you to provide. πŸ”

Generally, you need to respond within 30 days of receiving your notice (but double-check the due date for your exact letter).

If you had a tax accountant prepare your return for the tax year in question, let them know you've received this notice and would like their help!

The dreaded Notice LT11: This is your notice of intent to levy and your right to a hearing.

Basically, the IRS hasn't received a response to previous notices regarding your balance(s) due, and they're running out of patience.

This notice is *serious* and requires a response. πŸ“¨

Otherwise, the IRS can pursue wage garnishments, levy your bank accounts, and seize certain assets.

If you've gotten to the point where you've received an LT11, it's time for professional help to ensure you're meeting all deadlines and advocating for your best interests.

Okay, getting into the IRS notices that *feel* a little scarier: it's CP2000.

This letter lets you know that the IRS received income or payment info from a third party that doesn't match what you reported.

Here's what you need to know about this notice ↓

The IRS is just letting you know that they noted some inconsistencies with your return.

It doesn't necessarily mean you got something wrong! That income could be reported elsewhere on your return.

You (and your tax accountant) should review the notice against your filed return and respond accordingly.

This isn't a letter to ignore; make sure to follow the instructions listed on your notice.

So... this one is a not-so-fun notice. It's basically the IRS telling you that they think you owe them money! If you work...

So... this one is a not-so-fun notice.

It's basically the IRS telling you that they think you owe them money!

If you worked with a tax accountant for the tax year in question, let them know you received this notice and would like additional support responding!

Over the next week, I'm going to be covering 5️⃣ of the most common IRS notices I see.

If you want to know exactly what these notices mean (and how you need to respond), lock in.

Let's kick off the series with CP12: the notice you get when the IRS has made a change to your tax return that affects your refund of tax due.

I'd say your tax returns fit into the perfect little DIY tax box if you've just got a W-2, maybe some interest income, and you take the standard deduction...

You've just gotta click the e-file button and close the TurboTax website until the same time next year. βœ”οΈ

But, here are a few signs your DIY tax era might be coming to an end:

β†’ You started a business and aren't sure which form(s) you need to file.

β†’ You're Googling all of the questions TurboTax asks you about deductions and credits (and think you might've messed up a few).

β†’ You moved to a new state with state income tax.

β†’ You want tax strategies that lower your tax bill AND align with your short- and long-term goals

I do SOOO much more than just enter numbers on a form. I make sure you're planning strategically for the future! πŸ’°

Sharing some HUGE news about charitable deductions ↓

In past years, charitable contributions used to only help taxpayers who itemized (aka didn't take the standard deduction) on their tax return.

But starting in 2026, taxpayers who take the standard deduction can ALSO deduct certain charitable contributions.

How much?

If you're single β†’ up to $1,000.

If you're married filing jointly β†’ up to $2,000.

This deduction generally applies to cash donations made to qualifying charities only. Gifts to individuals do NOT count.

The LAST thing I'm asking you to do is sign over all your legal rights. πŸ“

The reason I may need a Power of Attorney from you isn't for legal control; it's to get your authorization to talk to the IRS on your behalf!

Tax POAs can be limited to a specific tax period or tax form. It does NOT give me broad access to your affairs. πŸ™…πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ

Why a POA? Instead of sitting around waiting on speaker phone when you call the IRS, I can just handle it all for you!

You can also revoke a tax POA at any time by naming a new representative or by submitting a written revocation statement to the IRS.

HOT TAKE: It should be illegal to have a tax due date fall on a Monday! πŸ™ƒ

If you clocked that quarterly taxes don't always follow a "quarterly" schedule, here's why ↓

Way back in the day, Tax Day used to be March 15th, so Congress counted three months out and set June 15th as the next estimated tax deadline. πŸ“†

But when Tax Day got pushed back to April 15th (not complaining, btw), the June 15th deadline stayed the same.

Soooo, unfortunately, that's why your Q2 estimated taxes are due just two short months after you paid your April ones.

I don't make the rules; I just make sure you don't miss the deadlines! πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ
