Employee benefits are under increasing pressure.

With employer health benefit costs projected to rise 6.5% in 2026, many businesses are looking for ways to reduce expenses. But before making cuts, it's worth considering what those decisions could cost in employee trust, retention, and recruitment.

Benefits are more than a budget item. Before making cuts, employers should:
✔️ Understand which benefits are legally protected.
✔️ Review state laws before changing PTO policies.
✔️ Evaluate which benefits employees value most.
✔️ Communicate changes early, clearly, and with empathy.
✔️ Consult HR and legal professionals before making final decisions.

Sometimes difficult business decisions are unavoidable. How those decisions are communicated can make all the difference.

At PayServ, we help businesses navigate payroll, HR and workforce challenges with confidence.

Starting July 1, 2026, the standard business mileage rate jumps from 72.5¢ to 76¢ per mile, with medical and moving rates rising too. The change comes in response to a sharp spike in gas prices this summer.

If you reimburse employees for business mileage, make sure your payroll and expense systems reflect the new rate for any miles driven on or after July 1. Trips before that date still use the old rate.

High temperatures are expected this week. Now is the time to review your workplace heat safety procedures.

Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, especially for employees working outdoors or in hot indoor environments.
The New York State Department of Labor has published guidance to help employers reduce heat-related risks. While New Jersey and Connecticut do not currently have statewide occupational heat standards, employers still have a responsibility under OSHA's General Duty Clause to provide a safe workplace. They should take reasonable steps to protect workers from excessive heat.

Simple precautions can make a big difference:
• Encourage frequent water breaks.
• Provide access to shade or cool areas.
• Schedule strenuous work during cooler parts of the day when possible.
• Train supervisors and employees to recognize the signs of heat-related illness and respond quickly.

Several other states, including California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Minnesota, Colorado, Maryland, and Virginia, have adopted or issued workplace heat safety requirements or guidance, and additional states are considering similar standards.

If your team works in the heat, check out the guidance on the New York DOL website.
