Myth: Receiving a refund this year eliminates the need to adjust withholding for 2025.

Taxpayers who experience life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth or adoption of a child, a change in dependent care credit eligibility, or changes in dependents are encouraged to review their withholding.

To avoid a surprise next year, taxpayers should make adjustments now to prepare for next year. One approach is to adjust tax withholding with your employer using the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator tool to determine the correct withholding amount. Since withholding occurs throughout the year, it is advisable to take this step now.
