Attention All Newlyweds ----This is what you need to do, when you say, "I do"! 🥰

For taxes, your marital status as of December 31 determines your tax filing --- Married Filing Joint or Married Filing Separate.

You also need to report any name change to the Social Security Administration. Complete Form SS-5 at SSA.gov.

If your address changed, complete Form 8822 at IRS.gov.

Also you must complete a new Form W-4, for your employer. You should use the Tax Withholding Estimator on IRS.gov to check your withholding and help you complete Form W-4.

🥰Congratulations to Paige Akins & Michael Heid on their beautiful wedding!

Do you know someone who has a change in marital status?
The IRS considers a couple married, for filing tax purposes, if they are married as of December 31st. A couple is not divorced until there is a final decree of divorce or separate maintenance.

When a taxpayer divorces or separates, a new Form W-4 should be completed and given to your employer to change your Federal Withholding.

Generally the parent with custody of a child can claim them on their tax return. If parents can't decide who claims the child, they should refer to the tie-breaker rules in Publication 504 www.irs.gov.

Child Support payments are NEVER deductible and are NEVER taxable.

Also, if a taxpayer transfers property to their former spouse due to a divorce, there's no recognized gain or loss on the transfer.

NEW 1099 Thresholds!
Finally, what we have all been waiting for!
OBBBA changes the reporting thresholds for Form 1099-K, Form 1099-MISC and Form 1099-NEC.

Now in order to receive a Form 900-K the threshold is $20,000 and 200 transactions.

The New SALT Deduction!
SALT is the federal deduction for state and local taxes.

The SALT deduction was unlimited going back to 1913. In 2017, Congress installed a $10,000 cap on the SALT deduction.

The new 2025 tax law increases the SALT cap to $40,000 for 5 years. That is QUADRUPLED!!! But in 2030 it goes back to $10,000.

And there is a PHASE-OUT if you make more than $500,000.

Stay tuned for more posts about the New 2025 Tax Law!

Is Social Security Tax Really Ended for Seniors?
Is Santa Claus Real?

The answer to both of these questions is "NO"!

The newly signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBA) includes a $6,000 tax deduction "bonus" if you are over the age of 65 and make less than $75,000 a year or $150,000 for couples filing jointly. Those who earn above these thresholds will see the deduction phase out. Individuals who earn more than $175,000 and couples who earn over $250,000 do not qualify for the deduction. ALSO, the "bonus" is only in place until 2028.

Here are some helpful tips to know when it is really the IRS:
- The IRS doesn't make initial contact through email, texts, phone calls or social media.
- A letter or notice is the 1st way the IRS will contact you.
- Log in to your secure IRS Online Account to see if the letter or notice is in your file.
- Contact the IRS customer service directly to authenticate the letter or notice.

And don't forget to take some time to smell the flowers along the way! 😉

Do you have a Hobby or a Business?

The BIGGEST difference between the two is that businesses operate to make a profit while hobbies are for pleasure or recreation.

Either way, they may receive an IRS Form 1099-K for transactions. These payments are taxable income and must be reported on federal tax returns.

Here are some QUESTIONS to help you decide if you have a Hobby or a Business:

? Is there an intent to make a profit?
?? Do you depend on the income for your livelihood?
??? Are losses due to circumstances beyond your control?
???? Are losses normal for the start up or your type of business?
????? Is the activity carried out like a business w/ books & records?
?????? Do you have the knowledge to make it successful?🤓

Whether you have a Hobby or run a Business, good record keeping throughout the year will help when you file your taxes.

And just think.... we are less than 6 months away from Christmas! AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT SEASON COMES AFTER THAT!!! 😎🎄

In the 33 years that I have been preparing taxes, I NEVER met a single person who liked paying taxes! I also never heard someone say, " I want to pay the MOST TAX possible!"

No one likes paying taxes.
But it certainly helps pay your taxes when you COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!
