The new Automatic Exemption from Penalty, or AEP, is a systemic administrative relief program that provides penalty relief for taxpayers with a history of filing and paying on time. 💰 With the federal government ending penny production, Maryland is allowing cash transactions to be rounded to the nearest 5 cents when exact pennies are unavailable.
✔️ Prices or change may be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel using specific rounding rules.
✔️ Items priced under 5 cents may be rounded up to 5 cents.
✔️ The taxable sales price and sales tax due remain unchanged.
This change affects only the cash amount exchanged—not the amount subject to sales tax.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A new Maryland law allowing retailers to round cash transactions to the nearest nickel took effect immediately last week following its signing by Gov. Wes Moore as an emergency measure.

📢 Good news for Maryland's public safety retirees!
Beginning in tax year 2025, the subtraction modification for qualifying public safety retirement income will gradually increase from $15,000 to $20,000 over a five-year period.
✅ 2025: $15,000 subtraction
✅ Annual increases thereafter
✅ 2030: $20,000 subtraction
This phased-in increase provides additional tax relief for eligible retired public safety personnel and their families.
