If you are a Maryland teacher or public worker, your pension election is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.
Once you sign that page, it is permanent
The Maryland State Retirement System offers 7 payout choices. But many people fall into a trap by choosing the Basic Allowance.
Why? Because it gives you the biggest monthly check while you are alive.
Here is the catch: The day you pass away, those checks stop completely. Your spouse gets nothing.
If you are married, you may want to look at
A dual life annuity (a plan that keeps paying income to your surviving spouse)
Or a pop-up provision. This protects your spouse while you are both living. But if your spouse passes away first, your monthly check "pops up" to the maximum payout amount.
Your pension isn't an isolated decision. It works hand-in-hand with Social Security and your personal savings. Before you sign, review your options with a trusted advisor who sees your whole picture.
