How are Black Hills business owners really doing in 2026?

We surveyed small business owners across Western South Dakota this June and July — construction, healthcare, retail, hospitality, real estate, ag, and professional services — and the picture is a mix of resilience and real pressure.

A few highlights:
→ 53.8% are optimistic about the next 12 months
→ But 51.3% name rising costs their #1 challenge
→ 87.2% run lean, with five or fewer people
→ And a third are still keeping books on pen and paper or nothing at all

We built this survey because there wasn't a recurring, public read on how Black Hills owners themselves are experiencing conditions on the ground — beyond permits and payroll stats.

May 17–23, 2026, is National EMS Week, and we’re proud to shine a spotlight on a very special member of our family—Evan Mackey, son of Black Hills Accounting’s owner. Evan serves as an EMT with Belle Fourche Ambulance and is also a volunteer firefighter. Currently, he’s working toward his paramedic certification through the School of EMS.

The apple didn't fall far from the tree!

Congratulations to Andre Mackey, 18, who earned an Associate's Degree at Black Hills State University.

The Mackey family was very proud to see him choose quantitative economics as a career path. He's transferring to a larger university where that degree is offered, but everyone is grateful to BHSU for providing a supportive learning environment while he lived at home and pursued this first degree on his path to higher education.
