October 20, 2026 - The Farm - Washington, MA

Not too different than yesterday. High 30s this morning, although it's 42° as I write this. We're in some kind of in-between kind of weather. But, it's been nice, if you like cool weather. At least it hasn't been raining, especially that cold rain which I could do without. Well, sometimes it's nice, but not usually.

There was even a hint of color in the clouds this morning. Not much, but it was there along the eastern horizon. Just another cool sunny day here in western Massachusetts. Good day for some hot coffee, again.

I was out there early grabbing some photos as usual - Playing with different cameras and lenses. That was fun - For me anyway.

Until 2017, California's spiny lobster season opened in the dark, shortly after midnight, with divers and boaters setting nets by flashlight. 🦞

That year the Fish and Game Commission moved the opener to 6 a.m. The reason was blunt: wildlife officers kept responding to diving and boating accidents on opening night, some of them fatal, including divers in distress, near collisions between boats and vessels striking submerged objects in the dark. Under state regulation the season opens on the Saturday preceding the first Wednesday in October and closes the first Wednesday after March 15.

Lobster has not always been a luxury. During the Great Depression it was considered poor man's food. Today a typical season sells around 33,000 report cards, and in 2020-21 sales jumped by more than 30 percent to just under 46,000. About 10 percent of the catch is taken in the first 24 hours alone.
