As part of its 2026 Wealth Edition, the Birmingham Business Journal featured Melanie Nichols, CFA®, CFP®, Partner, Regional Director and Wealth Advisor at Waverly Advisors in Birmingham, in its article, “Top Local Financial Advisors Share What It Takes to Succeed in Wealth Management Today.”

The piece brought together perspectives from advisors at a handful of local firms on how the wealth management profession is evolving and what matters most when serving clients and building a career in the industry.

For Melanie, it starts with developing meaningful relationships and truly understanding the individuals and families she serves.

“I don’t want 400 clients. I want 75 to 100 clients that I can build deep relationships with, that we can learn about the families, that we can always be the first phone call.”

She also reflected on how much the profession continues to evolve and the value of learning across generations.

“I learn from our young people every single week. That’s different than it was 20 years ago. Twenty years ago, I might be giving all the advice to young people and now it’s much more of a two-way street.”

Melanie also discussed why she encourages more women to consider careers in wealth management and the importance she places on mentoring future leaders across Waverly.

“If my legacy can be I helped 10, 20, 30 young people come through this organization and their career is better, I’m going to call that a win.”

We’re pleased to see Melanie’s experience, perspective and commitment to clients, colleagues and the next generation of advisors highlighted in this year’s Birmingham Business Journal Wealth Edition.

Building generational wealth is not a single decision. It's a series of intentional steps that create long-term financial stability for your family.

If leaving a lasting legacy is one of your goals, here are six building blocks to consider.

• Manage Debt Strategically
High-interest debt can quietly erode your wealth-building ability. Prioritizing the payoff of costly liabilities can free up cash flow for savings and investments.

• Equity Through Homeownership
Real estate can be a cornerstone asset, helping you build equity and create an asset that may be passed down over time.

• Long-Term, Diversified Investing
A well-diversified portfolio aligned with your goals can help manage volatility while compound growth works in your favor.

• Start Saving Early
Building the habit of saving early on allows compound growth to work in your favor and can be more powerful than saving later in life.

• Tax-Efficient Strategies
Leveraging tax-advantaged accounts and tools such as trusts may help reduce tax exposure and enhance wealth transfer.

• Financial Knowledge and Values
A lasting legacy is an educational one too. Teaching the next generation responsible money habits helps them manage what they inherit.
Building generational wealth takes time, consistency, and thoughtful planning, and you don't have to navigate it alone.

Contact us today to start creating a personalized strategy for your family's future.

Market volatility got you second-guessing your strategy?

You're not alone, and here's the thing: reacting to short-term swings is often what costs investors the most.

History tells a clearer story than headlines do. Pullbacks are normal. Missing the market's best days (which often follow the worst ones) can meaningfully hurt returns. And time is still the most powerful tool for compounding growth.
