Starting a hot air balloon business, but it just isn't taking off? ;)

Don't worry, we've all been there! Sometimes our brilliant business ideas feel more like lead balloons than soaring success stories.

Here's the thing: Most businesses that struggle to "take off" aren't failing because of bad ideas - they're struggling because they don't have the right systems in place to get off the ground.

After 20+ years in finance and helping businesses transform their operations, I've seen this pattern over and over. Passionate entrepreneurs with amazing concepts who are missing the foundational pieces that actually make businesses soar:
βœ… Clear financial visibility - You can't navigate without knowing your numbers
βœ… Strategic decision-making frameworks - Every choice should move you toward your goals
βœ… Systems that work without you - So you can work ON your business, not just IN it
βœ… Realistic growth planning - Sustainable scaling beats crash-and-burn every time

The good news? Once you get these fundamentals right, that "taking off" feeling happens faster than you'd expect.

Ready to get your business off the ground (pun intended)?

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective to get those engines running! πŸš€

"I want to speak to the manager" – What if I told you… I AM the manager???

[The best part about being self employed is ______]

I'll go first: Making decisions that actually make sense without having to run them through 47 different approval processes.

You know that feeling when you KNOW exactly what needs to be done, but you have to wait for three meetings, two committee reviews, and your boss's boss's approval? Yeah, me neither - not anymore! πŸ™Œ

When someone asks to speak to the manager now, I get to say:
"Hi, that's me! How can I help you succeed today?"

The freedom to:
βœ… Implement better systems immediately
βœ… Choose clients who energize me instead of drain me
βœ… Price my services based on value, not corporate salary bands
βœ… Take a break when I need one without asking permission
βœ… Invest in my education because I see the ROI

But here's the plot twist: Being your own manager means you're also responsible for everything. The buck truly stops with you. No more blaming "corporate policy" when things go wrong.

The best part? When you succeed, it's because of the decisions YOU made, the systems YOU built, and the value YOU created.

Being self employed, you get to decide what work you do, and perhaps more importantly, who you do it with.

[The worst job I ever had was _______]

I'll go first: Working with a client who questioned every single recommendation, then blamed me when they didn't follow through.

You know the type - they hire you for your expertise, then spend every session explaining why your 20+ years of experience is wrong. They want results but refuse to implement anything. They drain your energy and make you dread checking your email.

That's when I realized the true power of being self-employed: I get to fire clients who aren't a good fit.

Now I work with business owners who:
βœ… Value expertise and are ready to take action
βœ… Come prepared and engaged to our sessions
βœ… See coaching as an investment, not an expense
βœ… Celebrate wins and learn from setbacks

The beautiful thing about entrepreneurship? You can build a business filled with people who energize you instead of drain you. Your ideal clients are out there - the ones who appreciate what you bring to the table and are excited to grow alongside you.

Life's too short to work with people who make you miserable.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - Dr. Seuss

Tell us: What book influenced your mindset about business and life? πŸ€”

We'll start: The Art of War - Sun Tzu

Great choice! Strategic thinking is everything in business. For me, it's been a combination of books that shaped my approach:

"Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki completely changed how I think about money and assets. It taught me the difference between working FOR money and having money work for you - a lesson that's been crucial in building BizBright while maintaining my 9-5.

But honestly? Some of my biggest "aha moments" have come from accounting textbooks during my current bachelor's program. I know, not exactly bestseller material! πŸ˜… But understanding the "why" behind financial principles I'd been using instinctively has been game-changing for how I teach others.

What I've learned after 20+ years: The best business books don't just give you tactics - they shift how you think about problems entirely.

Dr. Seuss was right about learning taking you places. Every book, course, and conversation has led me closer to being able to help other entrepreneurs find their financial clarity and confidence.

"Come get your fresh lemonade, now mixed with mom's spicy water from the top shelf!"

For some, entrepreneurialism is a natural trait which develops very early in life.

We want to know: What was your first ever business?

I love hearing these stories because they reveal so much about our entrepreneurial DNA! Whether it was a lemonade stand, selling friendship bracelets, or mowing lawns, those early ventures taught us lessons we still use today.

For me? My real entrepreneurial education started when I managed my husband's electronics service business for 15+ years. Talk about learning on the job! I went from knowing nothing about business operations to handling everything from bookkeeping to customer service to strategic planning.

That experience taught me:
How to juggle multiple priorities (sound familiar?)
The importance of keeping accurate financial records
That cash flow is the lifeblood of any business
How to problem-solve under pressure

Looking back, those weren't just "business skills" - they were life skills that prepared me for everything I'm doing now with BizBright.

The beautiful thing about entrepreneurship? It doesn't matter if you started with a lemonade stand at 8 or launched your first business at 48. What matters is that willingness to take ownership, solve problems, and create value for others.

Ready to turn those early entrepreneurial instincts into a thriving business?

The wonderful thing about being an entrepreneur is that you can choose to start any type of business, based on your own interests.

And there are so many different types of business to choose from!

But here's what I wish someone had told me when I started: Your passion is just the starting point - your numbers are what keep the doors open.

I've seen brilliant entrepreneurs with amazing ideas fail because they fell in love with their concept but ignored their cash flow. And I've watched "boring" businesses thrive because the owners understood their financials inside and out.

After 20+ years in finance, here's what I've learned about choosing the right business:
βœ… Follow your interests - You'll need that passion to get through the tough days
βœ… But validate the market - Does someone actually want to pay for what you're offering?
βœ… Understand the numbers - What are your real costs? Your profit margins? Your break-even point?
βœ… Know your why - Is this about freedom, impact, money, or something else entirely?

For me? I chose business coaching and financial education because I genuinely love helping entrepreneurs succeed, AND I saw a real need in the market. Too many brilliant business owners were struggling not because they lacked talent, but because they lacked financial clarity.

The sweet spot is where your interests, market demand, and profitable business model all intersect.

When running your own business, it will always be full of ups and downs…

Especially when you sell yo-yos ;)

But in all seriousness, those entrepreneurial ups and downs are REAL. One day you're celebrating a new client win, the next you're staring at your bank account wondering how you're going to make payroll.

I've been there. Building BizBright while juggling my 9-5 and school has been the ultimate emotional roller coaster. Some weeks I feel like I'm crushing it, other weeks I question if I'm completely crazy for thinking I can pull this off.

Here's what I've learned about managing those ups and downs:

The businesses that survive the roller coaster aren't the ones that avoid the dips - they're the ones that have systems in place to handle them. When you have clear financial visibility and a solid decision-making framework, those downs become manageable challenges instead of business-ending crises.

The difference? Instead of panicking when things get tough, you have data to guide you through it. Instead of making emotional decisions during the highs, you stay strategic about growth.

Ready to smooth out some of those business ups and downs?

A good business mentor can change your life!

[The best business advice I’ve ever received is ______]

I'll go first: "Your business should serve your life, not consume it."

This came from a seasoned entrepreneur when I was drowning in the chaos of building BizBright while juggling my 9-5 and school. I was working 70+ hour weeks, skipping family time, and convincing myself that "hustle culture" was the only way to succeed.

That one sentence changed everything.

It made me realize I wasn't building a business - I was building a prison. I started asking different questions:

What systems can I create so the business runs without me constantly hovering?

How can I work smarter, not just harder?

What would success look like if it actually improved my quality of life?

The result? I stopped glorifying burnout and started building sustainable systems. I learned to say no to opportunities that didn't align with my goals. I created boundaries that protected both my business growth AND my family time.

Now it's your turn! Fill in the blank:
The best business advice I've ever received is ______

With all this talk of student debt, it begs the question:

Is the school of life sufficient?

Test your knowledge, then feel free to leave your opinion in the comments below.

Around 12% of business owners only have their high school diploma.

Here's my take as someone currently pursuing my bachelor's in accounting while building a business:

Both matter, but in different ways.

The school of life taught me:
How to manage my husband's electronics business for 15+ years
Real-world problem-solving under pressure
How to adapt when things don't go according to plan
The value of persistence when everyone says "it won't work"

Formal education is teaching me:
The "why" behind financial strategies I've been using instinctively
How to communicate complex concepts clearly (hello, course creation!)
Frameworks that help me make faster, better decisions
Credibility that opens doors with certain clients

The truth? I've learned just as much from managing a real business as I have in any classroom. But my accounting courses are giving me the language and structure to teach others what I've discovered through experience.

What I wish more people knew: Success isn't about having the "right" education - it's about never stopping your education, whether that's in a classroom or in the trenches of your business.

What would a business coach do for me anyway?

Very glad you asked :)

A good business coach will create a program designed as a 3-way partnership between the business, the coach, and the client (you).

In the beginning, you'll work together with the coach to determine what exactly are your goals.

These could be geared toward the success of the business, as well as toward the satisfaction of personal needs.

Then a strategy will be created, complete with a timeline and schedule that works with YOUR life and business demands. Because here's what I've learned after 20+ years in finance: the best strategies are the ones you can actually stick to.

This isn't about me telling you what to do - it's about us working together to build systems that make sense for your specific situation. Whether that's streamlining your bookkeeping processes, setting up financial dashboards that actually get used, or creating realistic growth targets that don't burn you out.

The magic happens when you start seeing patterns in your numbers, making confident decisions without second-guessing yourself, and finally having the financial clarity to focus on what you do best - running your business.

But here's the thing - you don't have to wait for one-on-one coaching to start transforming how you make business decisions.

Ready to stop flying blind with your finances and start making data-driven decisions that fuel real growth?
