For business owners, the hourly wage is never the true cost of an employee. Payroll taxes, workers’ comp, liability insurance, benefits, and other labor costs add up fast. If you’re pricing jobs based on wages alone, you could be underpricing your work without realizing it.

That's an employee. The label follows the facts.

Reclassification means back payroll taxes, penalties, and interest on every worker for every year. Workers comp exposure is worse.

List everyone you paid last year who wasn't on payroll. Handle the uneasy ones before it becomes a notice.

Owners point at the calendar and tell me it was their best month ever. Then we open the books and it was one of the worst.

One plumbing shop had a record August. Nearly 40 percent of it was subbed out at a 12 percent markup. Great revenue, almost no profit.

Look at your months by margin instead of revenue. If your biggest month has your worst margin, that repeats next year unless something changes.

An excavating contractor told me his mini excavator cost $45 an hour. Payment divided by the hours he figured he ran it.

The real number was $78.

Ownership costs run whether the machine moves or not, so every hour you don't run drives up the cost of the ones you do. One machine at 900 hours beats three at 300.

Pull the hour meter today, check it again in ninety days. That's a real number instead of a guess.
