In a world full of data and statistics, there are always debates when it comes to naming the “bests” and “worsts”. People will debate professional athletes, movies, restaurants, etc, to ultimately conclude that someone or something can be named the “best of all time” in their respective category. Often though, these debates are based simply off opinion instead of measurable data.

Although the market is a much less fun debate topic than those other topics, I’m sure many have heard, or thought, that this year has been one of the worst years for their investment accounts. The stats would agree.

On the attached slide, you’ll see a list of the worst years for both bonds and stocks. 2022 has been the worst year for bonds since 1926. 2022 has been the 4th worst year for stocks since 1926. When I first looked through this BlackRock presentation, I was shocked. I obviously knew it’s been a negative year for the market, but 2022 has been truly historic.

It’s scary when first looking at this type of data, however it’s important to look at the full picture. On this slide, it also lists the performance for the next 12 months. On average, bonds have had a return of +9.3% 12 months later, and stocks have had a return of +9.9% 12 months later. Like always, past performance does not guarantee or indicate future results. However, when looking over a longer time horizon, these “worst years of all time”, get overshadowed by positive years.

Market volatility is natural and part of the process. During times like these, it's important to stay focused on the overall plan and not fall victim to panic-selling.

By the way, Michael Jordan is my answer for the best athlete of all time. Why?
-6 NBA Championships…6-0 in the Finals…2 separate 3-peats
-5 League MVPs
-6 Finals MVPs
-10 NBA Scoring Titles
-14 All Star Game Appearances…only missed the All Star Game when he took a break from the NBA for 1.5 seasons to play Minor League Baseball
-3 All Star Game MVPs
-2 Olympic Gold Medals
-NCAA National Championship

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to discuss further.

Fear plays a prominent role in causing investors to make changes to their investments. As shown on the attached infographic, investors traded 10x more in the 1st Quarter of 2020, than the did during the entire year of 2009. 2020 was obviously unique in itself because of the pandemic, but fear causes these types of trends regularly.

It's extremely important to try and separate emotions from investing. Volatile times can be scary, but following the defined plan and objective can be very beneficial in the long-run.

“Yet in spite of extreme investor fear, the S&P 500 has proven resilient, with positive performance in 32 of the last 42 years.”

People rarely work for the same company for their entire career. Because of this, old 401ks/403bs/IRAs are often forgotten about and not properly allocated. Rolling over to a new 401k/403b/IRA, is not a difficult process.

Please send me a message if you have an old account that you'd like to review. I can run some analysis on the account and come up with some rollover options for you.

With Spring Break approaching for many families, I’ve been hearing about a lot of vacation trips that are planned. Most people plan their trips for months while some begin preparing a whole year in advance. People will search travel sites for the best destinations, deals, restaurants, etc. They’ll create detailed itineraries for flights and activities. They’ll read reviews about everything to make sure they’re set up for a successful trip.

Although that effort and preparation is necessary and beneficial, it’s usually just for a week-long trip. Imagine if everyone put that much focus and work into their entire financial future. Getting your finances organized to be financially prepared is not as fun as planning a vacation, but it does not need to be a daunting, scary task. Set a goal, create a plan, follow the plan.

Please let me know if you’d like to set up a time to discuss your financial goals and investing plans.

There are so many different types of charts and graphs that can be used to show the importance of investing. My team and I love the attached slide from BlackRock that shows the investment and time needed to become a millionaire by age 65. Becoming a millionaire often seems unrealistic, but it looks much more possible when simplifying it like this.

To become a millionaire at age 65, assuming 10% annual returns compounded monthly:

• a 15-year-old needs to invest $60 per month for 50 years for a total investment contribution of $36,000
• a 25-year-old needs to invest $160 per month for 40 years for a total investment contribution of $77,000
• a 35-year-old needs to invest $440 per month for 30 years for a total investment contribution of $158,000
• a 45-year-old needs to invest $1,310 per month for 20 years for a total investment contribution of $314,000
• a 55-year-old needs to invest $4,850 per month for 10 years for a total investment contribution of $582,000

Although the task of becoming a millionaire gets more difficult the later you start, there are plenty of steps that can be taken at any age to increase your chances of a successful retirement.

Please let me know if you’d like to set up some time to discuss your investing goals.
