The IRS is still in the process of sending out stimulus checks to people, electronically and on paper. Many people were surprised and delighted to receive $1,200 checks for family members who had died in 2018 or 2019. Conveniently, the checks even had DECEASED printed directly on the check.

There has been some controversy about whether or not we had to return those checks to the IRS. Especially since the CARES Act did say that when folks filed their 2020 tax returns, they wouldn’t have to return the money if it turned out they received too much.

And therein lies the answer. People who died in 2018 and 2019 will not be filing 2020 tax returns. (Their estates might for income after death that is still to be distributed to heirs; but that’s not the same thing, is it?)

Answers to frequently asked questions about Economic Impact Payments (coronavirus stimulus checks). These questions and answers will be updated periodically.

We wanted to share some information for those if you who have applied or have already received a SBA PPP loan:
75% of the PPP loan must be payroll and the employer must bring back all of the employees they had, they must have the same amount of employees when they applied or more.

Business who don't bring back their entire workforce will have their eligible forgiveness amount reduced.

If you are eligible to receive the Economic Impact Payment and have previously had issues entering your banking information on the IRS portal, you should try it again as they have made some enhancements to the portal and the problem is resolved. We did a few today and had no problem completing the process. If you do not get your banking information entered you will receive a paper check to the address you used for your most recent tax filing.

They are urging Social Security and SSI recipients with qualifying children who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov and enter your information with your dependents information so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. They will have your information but not the information of your qualifying dependents. If you have a qualifying child under the age of 17 you will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to the $1200 individual payment.

We understand and have experienced ourselves that some people are having issues with the IRS.gov "Get My Payment" portal when trying to enter their banking information to receive their Economic Impact Payment/Stimulus money. We have noticed that those of you owed Federal taxes on their most current filing are the ones having trouble with this process. If you are unable to enter your payment information you will still receive your payment but it will come in the form of a paper check mailed to the address you used for your most recent filing.

If you have not filed a 2019 return we suggest you NOT use the "Non-Filers Enter Your Payment Info Here" portal on IRS.gov website because doing this will act as your 2019 filing and would then cause you to need to do an amended return for 2019, and because the IRS isn't processing ANY paper returns (amended returns) this in turn cause your true 2019 return be even more delayed. This process was implemented so quickly that there are still hiccups with the system. We understand these times are hard and many people are in need of the money but we encourage you to be patient and wait for a paper check if this situation, applies to you.
