Two people. Two different approaches. Two very different outcomes.

One person starts saving early, putting away just $100 per month for the first 10 years of her career. Then she stops contributing and lets her money continue to grow.

The other waits 10 years before getting started. To catch up, she saves twice as much every month.

After 20 years, they end up with nearly the same amount of money.

The surprising part?

The early saver contributed only half as much.

The lesson is simple: when it comes to building wealth, time can be more valuable than the amount you invest.

You do not need to start with a large sum. You just need to start.

Compound interest is one of the most powerful forces in personal finance.

When you're saving and investing, time allows your money to grow on top of previous growth. But when debt carries a high interest rate, that same principle can work in the opposite direction, making balances grow faster than many people expect.

The difference often comes down to the decisions we make today.

Are you building momentum with your savings and investments, or allowing interest costs to slow down your financial progress?

Small financial choices made consistently over time can have a surprisingly large impact on your future.

Do you know all your Federal Benefits?

🤒 Most federal employees don't realize that unused sick leave can directly increase their FERS pension.

When you retire, your sick leave balance is converted into additional creditable service.

🗓️ Roughly 174 hours equals one extra month added to your years of service, and there's no cap on how much can be credited.

One catch: this only applies to immediate retirements. If you leave federal service before you're retirement eligible, that balance is forfeited.

🔎 It's one of the most overlooked benefits in the federal system. Don't leave it on the table.

Freedom is a word we hear a lot on Memorial Day.
But it doesn’t just live in parades and ceremonies.
It shows up in the quiet, everyday choices we make - especially in retirement.

You can spend years saving and investing…
and still feel unsure what that freedom will actually look like when the work chapter closes.

What will your days feel like?
What will matter most?
Who do you want to spend that time with?

I’m Peggy Farnworth with Boise Retirement Coach, and I help people turn that idea of freedom into a real, lived plan for retirement - right here in the Treasure Valley.

If you’re within a few years of retirement, what’s one way you hope your life feels freer in that season? I’d love to hear it in the comments.
