Remember March 2020? A couple of my clients were coming back from a trip right when Covid hit and the market tanked, wanting to buy a motorized catamaran and outfit the cabin.

They didn't have the cash sitting there, which meant selling investments — right when the market was down. My question to them: are you good to wait? Do you need this now, or can we wait a little bit?

They waited. The market came back by that fall. Their response: "It's only money."

Not every purchase has to happen the moment the market drops. Sometimes the best move is patience.

One dollar of extra income two years ago could be costing you hundreds of dollars a month in Medicare premiums right now — and most people don't find out until it's too late.

Medicare premiums aren't based on this year's income. They're based on your tax return from two years ago. Cross a certain income line by even $1, and you don't pay a little more — you jump into a whole new bracket. In 2026, that line is $109,000 for single filers and $218,000 for a married couple, and crossing it can push your Part B premium from around $203 a month to over $284 (or up to $586 for a married couple).

Peggy explains why her office watches this "IRMAA cliff" every year, and how being tax-smart in your 50s and early 60s — including Roth conversions — can help you avoid it.

Giving $5,000 to charity from your IRA? How you do it changes what it actually costs you.

Send it to your checking account first, then write the check, and you'll pay tax on that withdrawal — 22% or 24% — before it ever reaches the charity. A $5,000 gift can end up costing you $6,200.

Send that same $5,000 directly from your IRA to the charity as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), and it satisfies your RMD while the tax bill is zero. Same gift, same charity, completely different cost to you.

If you're charitably inclined and taking RMDs, this is the math worth knowing.

A couple retiring at 65 can spend $300,000 or more on healthcare, and most people don't plan for it. 🩺

Still working? A Health Savings Account is one of the best ways to save.

Already on Medicare? You can't add to an HSA anymore, but Idaho has its own Medical Savings Account. You can deduct up to $10,000 a year if you're single or $20,000 if you're married.

Choosing between Medicare Advantage and Medigap matters too. Advantage usually has a lower premium, but a knee or hip replacement can leave you with a $5,000 or $6,000 bill. Medigap might cost $200 to $300 more a month, and your costs are much easier to predict.

Roth conversions come with a clock most people don't know about.

Once you convert, that money has to stay in the Roth for a five-year period. Pull it out early and you can face a penalty. And yes, the IRS is tracking this — if you have IRAs, you get a form each May (the 5498) that reports your account values, so they know exactly what you converted and when.

Here's the part that trips people up: every conversion starts its own five-year clock. Convert in year one, then again in year two, then again in year three — each one has its own countdown. The very first conversion you ever do is the one that determines when the whole thing becomes fully accessible.

The best retirement account you own might not be the one you think. 🤔

If you have a health savings account, you might be treating it like a checking account for doctor visits, pay in, pay out, keep the balance near zero. That's the single most common way people waste an HSA.

Here's what makes it different: money you put in is tax-deductible going in, it grows tax-free, and if you use it for medical expenses, it comes out tax-free too. No other account does all three.

In 2026, you can put in $4,400 for yourself or $8,750 for a family, plus another $1,000 if you're 55 or older. Pay this year's medical bills out of pocket, let it grow, and by retirement you'll have a pool of money for healthcare costs, completely tax-free.

Most people never flip that switch. It's worth asking whether you should.

Jim and Anne were both 68, both retired, both Medicare-age eligible. One missed detail is now costing them for the rest of their lives.

Anne went into a retiree health care plan after leaving her job, but it wasn't "credible coverage." That one detail meant she should have signed up for Medicare right then. She didn't, and now there's a 10% penalty for every year she missed.

Last year that penalty was $185 x 12 x 2 people. This year Medicare's premium is $202, so the penalty alone runs about $20.20 more per person, per month, for life. Over a lifetime, that can add up to $10,000 or more.

Before you or your spouse leave a job near Medicare age, check whether your coverage actually counts as "credible." It's a deadline you don't want to miss.

The IRS just handed retirement savers more room to save, and one group got a lot more than everyone else.

Your 401(k) limit is now $24,500 for 2026, up a full $1,000 from last year. If you're 50 or older, you can put in an extra $8,000 catch-up. Your IRA limit went up too, to $7,500, with a $1,100 catch-up if you're over 50.

But here's the number most people miss: if you're 60, 61, 62, or 63, you get an even bigger catch-up, $11,250 instead of $8,000. That's not a typo, and that window closes the year you turn 64.

If you've been meaning to increase your contribution and just haven't gotten around to it, this is your reminder that the room got bigger this year, and for a few of you, it got a lot bigger.

$500,000 growing at 6% for almost 30 years, at a 0% tax rate, comes out to over $2.5 million.

Now add taxes back in. At a realistic 12% rate in retirement, you land just over $2 million — not quite $2.5M. And if you're also collecting a pension, Social Security, and RMDs that push you into a 33% bracket? That same $500,000 doesn't even make it to $2 million.

Same starting number. Same growth rate. Wildly different outcomes, all because of taxes.

This is why the tax bracket you'll actually be in during retirement matters just as much as how your money grows.
