Fenway Studios

Fenway Studios America's oldest artist building In 1982, after renovations were completed, the studios were converted into an early limited-equity cooperative.

By 1974 ownership shares had passed to heirs, the studios were not being maintained, and they owed nearly $200,000 in back taxes. The "Artists for the Preservation of the Fenway Studios" was formed to save the studios, and in 1981 a mortgage paid for back taxes and building improvements. In 1998 façade structural issues were discovered, requiring emergency repairs costing $1.6 million, which requi

red additional fund raising through the Friends of Fenway Studios. As of 2007, the studios are currently home to 25 artists working in a wide range of media. Today there are 46 artists living and/or working in the building.

Did you know that Fenway Studios is a ? This is a BIG deal. The building was granted this designation in the late 1990s in recognition of being the oldest purpose built studio building in the country. Fenway Studios was built in 1905 specifically for artist and has been in continuous use as a studio building since then. In the 1980s, the building became a limited equity cooperative. The artists own shares and intentionally keep the cost of ownership low to allow the building to remain an artist building, especially since so many studio buildings in the city have been lost to development. It is not easy though. Maintaining a century-old building has its challenges. We have just kicked off a series of capital improvement projects, starting with our east facade masonry, which is in dire need of work.
We have a 503c organization, the Friends of Fenway Studios, who along with the studio artists are committed to maintaining this gem as a working studio building for the next century. Check out the link in our bio for more about our history and the artists who are working in the building today.

Fenway Studios artists recently convened outside the building to unfurl and install a massive mural along the fence across the street. The mural is a digital creation by , a long-time member of the coop. The imagery is a tribute to the building’s history, the current artists, and the larger Fenway neighborhood. Walk along the mural for a closer look and to spot the fun details tucked into the design. Many thanks to longtime Fenway Studios champion and supporter Lynda McNally for securing the funding to make this project happen.

The week before Labor Day saw Portuguese man-of-wars washing up along the north shore. Not only was swimming curtailed, but morning dog walkers kept their pets on short leashes, many deciding it was not worth a possible sting. On a late Thursday afternoon leading into the usually most crowded weeken...

Our Super is really super! Last week, Fenway artists met outside to raise a glass to our superintendent Jean Etienne and celebrate his 20 years of service at Fenway Studios. Jean has been a calm steady presence here at the co-op as well as a kind and friendly face. It is impossible to image Fenway Studios without Jean here at the helm!
