Quarter 4 is here, which means 1099 season is closer than it looks.

Here's a quick check to do this week. Pull up every contractor you've paid this year. Anyone you've paid $2,000 or more will need a 1099 by January 31, and you'll need a signed W-9 on file for each of them.

Missing a W-9 in October is a quick email. Missing one at the end of January means chasing down a contractor who's slow to reply while the deadline gets closer every day.

Tracking contractor payments and collecting W-9s is part of the bookkeeping I handle all year, so January doesn't turn into a scramble. If yours isn't in place yet, there's still plenty of time.

Sweater weather.

Coffee in hand, my favorite chair, and a sweater I've been waiting all year to pull out. Fall might be my favorite season to work.

It's also the season I start nudging my clients about year end, before the holidays take over everyone's calendar.

Nothing fancy. Just current, reconciled bookkeeping, so January starts calm instead of chaotic.

Pumpkin season.

Gomez is fully committed to fall. Hood up, pumpkin stem on top, and just a nose peeking out.

Fall is a good reminder that the year is winding down. There are about 10 weeks left before year end, which is plenty of time to get your bookkeeping caught up, as long as you start now instead of in December.

October is Women-Owned Small Business Month, and I'm proud to be one.

MSW Accounting was built by a woman who spent over 20 years doing the work before she ever put her name on the door. It started with a bachelor's degree in accounting with honors, earned on an academic scholarship while working full time. Then came years at a CPA firm, financial statement work for a large publicly traded company, 8 years at one of the largest payroll processors in the country, and 2 separate roles as controller.

Fred and Ethel after a long week. Same pose, same level of exhaustion, and zero plans to move.
