Taxes could very well be your largest lifetime expense. Yet most people know very little about tax planning! As a Certified Financial Planner™️ tax planning is one of the #1 areas I add value to my clients.

Most people do not know that the US has a graduated tax system. Every dollar you earn is NOT taxed at the same rate.

Two things you should know about your taxes, what is your marginal tax rate and what is your average (or effective) tax rate.

Reach out if you want help planning for your future with a tax focused lens!

How did you do building wealth this year? Do you know how much you saved??

Everyone always talks about spending rates, budgeting, etc, but what if we started focusing on savings? Set yourself some savings goals, and if you’re hitting them, don’t worry so much about what your spending.

Now right now, today go do this! Go tally up all your earnings for 2025- look at your paystubs. Write it all down.

Now go to your checking and savings accounts. Download the December 31st statement of last year to see your balances and compare them to this year. Is your cash up?? Did you save in cash this year? Or is it down? Write this down too.

Now go look at all your investment accounts and write down all the contributions you made this year. Your 401(k)c, Roth, brokerage accounts, HSA, 529 plans, etc. tally up all those contributions and add them to your cash savings.

Okay now, take your total savings and divide it by your gross income. Gross means before taxes. This will give you your percentage savings rate for the year.

Ideally you are saving at least 15% of your gross income so work can become optional. If you are a high earner, I’m talking $200k single or $400k joint, this should be closer to 20-25%. If you weren’t there this year, let’s come up with a savings plan for next year.

As a reminder, the more you save now, the more options you’ll have in your future!

Yesterday we had our Lunch N’ Learn: A Guide To Supporting Your Aging Parents.

Our conference room was filled with our clients who are navigating the hard journey of supporting their parents as they age. Amy and Alana shared tips and resources to get through this time. But the real value of this Lunch N’ Learn was the participation from all of our clients. Everyone shared their experiences and insights and we were all learning from one another. Here are some of the top tips our clients shared during our lunch:

1. Give your parents options. One client shared how he brought his mom to three assisted living facilities to choose. He knew which one was best for her, but instead of deciding himself, he showed her all three, giving her the illusion she was making the decision, and ultimately she decided on the option that her son thought was best, but it gave her the feeling of having some power.
2. You can’t wait for them to ask for help. Often times they won’t, you’ll have to recognize signs and step in.
3. Navigating this phase of life is so emotional. For the parent and the child. There are ups and downs and sometimes your parent may feel angry.
4. One of our clients who is a firefighter shared that if your parent has a DNR (do not resuscitate) print it on neon paper and hang it on the fridge. If paramedics come and don’t have the DNR accessible, they won’t be able to honor your wishes. What good insight we never thought of.
5. You cannot be proactive enough. Have the conversations early and often. Don’t think one conversation is enough. Most of our clients shared they wish they would have been better prepared, knew where documents were, and had the conversations earlier.

It was a tough, emotional topic for our Lunch N’ Learn but it’s so important. Who wants us to do a webinar on this topic?!
