Last month, the White House announced they will be forgiving up to $10,000 of federal student loan debt and extending the payment freeze until December 31 for the final time.
You're eligible for the forgiveness if you made less than $125,000 (or $250,000 married filing jointly) in 2020 or 2021.
Forgiveness will be tax free at the Federal level but may be subject to state income tax in some states. Kentucky has confirmed that they will not be taxing student loan forgiveness.
If you have more than $10,000 in student loans or make more than the income limits, you need to begin preparing to restart payments in 2023. It may make sense to begin payments now before interest resumes.
If you voluntarily made payments since March 2020, you may be eligible for refunds with the possibility that those are forgiven. This has not been confirmed yet.
There were also updates to the PSLF waiver and the announcement of a new Income Driven Repayment plan.
Due to all the changes, I'm offering complimentary times to review your student loans and how you may be affected. Sign up below.
During this call we will review your student loans to create a plan based on your forgiveness eligibility and payments resuming in 2023.
