Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) is an international Christian organization whose purpose is to bring help, hope and healing through aviation to people living in isolation and poverty.

Every 6 minutes a MAF aircraft takes off or lands somewhere in the world, transporting people who live in remote villages and assisting missions, churches, aid and development agencies and others working to transform the lives of communities that are cut off from the outside world.

Atlas Trip Support recently provided our international trip support services for MAF to assist in the evacuation of several families out of the DRC during the recent outbreak of Ebola crisis.

For 6 weeks we provided our ground handling assistance, over flight & landing permits, and flight planning support for 6 flights from the DRC to Kenya, and then onto Uganda.

Story worth sharing. Have you heard of this?

He picked up the radio call at 4,000 feet.
Broken English. Clear intent.
"Hello. Any pilot. This is the village of Kwethluk Upriver.
We have cleared a strip.
Please come. We need help."
No such strip was on any chart.
No such strip was in any database.
He had 14 years of bush Alaska behind him.
He had never heard of Kwethluk Upriver.
He circled the coordinates. 🛩️
The strip was real.
800 feet. Cleared by hand from river willow and tundra.
Drainage ditches cut with shovels.
The surface compacted by foot traffic.
By the feet of 22 adults who had spent three weeks building it.
Because their nearest airstrip was 60 miles away.
Because their village had two elderly residents who needed regular medical care.
Because their river was frozen in winter and flooded in breakup.
Because they had decided:
if the strip doesn't exist, we build it.
He landed on it.
He was the first aircraft to touch it.
The entire village was on the side of the strip.
Men who had dug the drainage.
Women who had packed the surface.
Children who had never been this close to an airplane. 🙌
He climbed out.
The village elder walked forward.
She was a small woman.
She carried herself like someone who has solved large problems before.
She said: "We have been on the radio for three days.
You are the first pilot who answered."
He said: "I didn't know this strip was here."
She said: "It was not here three weeks ago.
We built it."
He looked at the strip.
At the willow stumps still visible at the edges.
At the drainage work.
At 800 feet of hand-cut Alaskan tundra that shouldn't exist but did.
He said: "It's a good strip."
She said: "We made it good enough for a plane.
Is it good enough for yours?"
He said: "You already know the answer.
I landed." ✨
He filed the strip's coordinates with the FAA that evening.
It was charted within the month.
He made it his personal business to fly the route twice a month.
He told every bush pilot he knew.
Three others added it to their regular runs.
The two elderly residents got their medical visits.
The village got its connection.
The strip the villagers built by hand — and the pilot who landed on a radio call to a place that wasn't on any chart — is on the Alaska aviation registry now.
Under a name the village chose.
In Yup'ik, it translates to:
"The strip we made because someone would come."
The universe doesn't always build the runway.
Sometimes it gives the people who need it
enough shovels and enough belief
to build it themselves.

Type "SOMEONE WOULD COME" if this village's hand-cut strip gave you chills at the level of something ancient and true 👇
