IRS Raises 2026 Standard Mileage Rate for Second Half of Year

The IRS has increased the optional standard mileage rate for business use of vehicles for the remainder of 2026, giving taxpayers a larger deduction for qualifying business travel. Effective July 1, 2026, the business mileage rate increased to 76 cents per mile, up from the 72.5 cents per mile rate that applied during the first half of the year. The IRS said the midyear adjustment was made in response to higher fuel costs.

The revised rate applies to taxpayers who use the standard mileage method to calculate deductible vehicle expenses, including many sole proprietors and self-employed individuals. Tax professionals should remind clients who use this method to maintain accurate mileage records and separate mileage driven before and after the July 1 effective date to apply the correct rates.

The IRS also increased the optional mileage rate for medical and qualified moving expenses to 23.5 cents per mile for eligible travel beginning July 1, 2026. The change marks the first midyear adjustment to the standard mileage rates since 2022 and highlights the importance of reviewing vehicle expense calculations for clients who rely on mileage deductions.

If you received IRS NOTICE CP53E recently...

Executive Order 14247 made changes for the 2026 filing season. IRS wants to eliminate paper check refunds and only direct deposit. If you still chose to have a paper check as a refund, you were advised that your refund would be delayed.

The new IRS Notice CP53E was automatically sent out to anyone who did not choose direct deposit giving you an opportunity to update your online account and enter your direct deposit information. If you don’t respond to the notice, the IRS will issue a paper check after 6 weeks.

However, we believe there are erroneous letters being sent out to those taxpayers who actually owed taxes or had their refunds applied to next year. If you owed taxes or had your refund applied, we are advising you to ignore the letter for now. We cannot get through to the IRS to find out why these letters are being sent out to individuals who were not expecting a refund.

There are also scammers who might send out letters that look like these new IRS notices with a QR code.

PLEASE BE SAFE and never scan a QR code on a letter. Always visit the official IRS website to login to your account or call the IRS directly.

A recent Executive Order 14247 led to changes in the direct deposit options you now have available. The new direct deposit change will allow individual taxpayers to provide us with a new or updated bank account to receive their tax refund via direct deposit if certain conditions are met.
