A new IRS process may make penalty relief automatic for some eligible taxpayers.

According to the IRS, taxpayers with a consistent history of filing and paying on time may automatically qualify for relief from certain common penalties, including failure-to-file, failure-to-pay, and failure-to-deposit penalties.

The IRS will apply the relief to eligible returns and send qualifying taxpayers a confirmation notice.
