The IRS is expected to begin accepting 2025 tax returns in late January 2026.
While an official, specific date has not yet been announced, the filing season traditionally opens in the last week of January. For example, the 2025 tax season began on January 27, 2025.

Key Dates for the 2026 Tax Season
*Late January 2026: The expected start date when the IRS will begin accepting and processing e-filed returns.
*April 15, 2026: The primary deadline to file your 2025 tax return and pay any taxes owed without incurring penalties. This date may shift if it falls on a weekend or holiday.
*October 15, 2026: The deadline to file if you request an automatic extension (Form 4868) by the April 15 deadline. Note that an extension to file is not an extension to pay any taxes owed.
Important Considerations
*E-file and Direct Deposit: The fastest way to receive a refund is to e-file and use direct deposit. Most refunds are issued within 21 days this way. The IRS has also stated that paper checks will be phased out for most refunds.
*Gather Documents Early: You can prepare for filing now by gathering all necessary documents, such as Forms W-2, 1099s, and records of any life changes.
*"Where's My Refund?" Tool: Taxpayers can track their refund status using the IRS's Where's My Refund? tool on their website or the IRS2Go app.

THE ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL ACT was signed into law on July 4, 2025, with many provisions taking effect immediately, such as some tax deductions for 2025. Other sections of the bill have different implementation dates, such as health insurance provisions starting in 2026 and 2027, and some will last until 2028 or beyond.
Immediate Effective Dates (Tax Year 2025)
Income Tax Relief: Some tax relief and deductions become effective for the 2025 tax year.
No Tax on Tips: There is no longer a tax on tips received in certain occupations.
Qualified Tip Deduction: Employees and self-employed individuals can deduct qualified tips, with an IRS list of occupations provided by October 2, 2025.
Senior Deduction: Seniors 65 and older can receive an additional deduction for tax years 2025 through 2028.
SALT Deduction: The State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction increases in 2025.
Overtime Deduction: Individuals can deduct qualified overtime compensation that exceeds their regular pay.

For most US households, filing their federal income tax returns results in a refund. The official start date of this year's tax filing season will be January 27, the IRS said Friday. That is the first day the agency will start accepting and processing 2024 income tax returns.

Will 2025 bring you a bigger tax refund? All things being equal, it might. Your tax refund may be bigger this year due to inflation-related changes to the standard deductions and tax brackets for 2024.
