🧩 Thought-Provoking Thursday- I heard a line recently that stopped me in my tracks: “There’s no pension for devotion.” There was a time when decades of loyalty to an employer were more likely to end with a pension and maybe even the proverbial gold watch.
The workplace has changed, but sometimes our thinking about loyalty hasn't.
“I've been here forever.”
“They've always been good to me.”
“My team needs me.”
Those aren't bad things. There is something admirable about being loyal to people and an organization you care about.
But it's also worth asking:
•What is that loyalty building for you?
•Is your compensation growing?
•Are you building retirement assets?
•Receiving a meaningful match, profit sharing, equity, professional development, or opportunities that increase your earning power?
You can love where you work and still know your value. You can be grateful and still negotiate. You can be loyal and still make sure you're building your own future while helping build someone else's.
Loyalty is admirable. But loyalty itself isn't a retirement plan. There’s no pension for devotion.
Tomorrow, let's talk about the people who actually do have a pension, because there's a lot more to understand than simply knowing you have one.
