Does the close of Silicon Valley bank spell trouble for all banks? Absolutely not.

Silicon Valley Bank painted itself into a corner by buying long-term treasury bonds to counterbalance a surge in bank deposits from venture capital companies.

When those deposits dried up and turned to withdrawals, interest rates had soared, devaluing the treasury bonds. That left a gaping hole in the bank’s balance sheet and they were done.

Investing 101 says don’t buy long-term bonds at record high prices and record low yields. All the smarts in Silicon Valley and they missed a basic fundamental principle of investing…unbelievable. are a real thing.

This article reminds me of an old joke: “Give an economist 15 minutes and they will end up arguing with themselves!”

The Fed is going to do what the Fed is going to do, meanwhile, Americans need to live their lives and not be worried about what we can’t control. Our concern needs to be over what we CAN control, which is our personal economy. Having a strong emergency fund, low debt, a good and solid sources of income are all things we can have an effect on. If you have those things, a is of little consequence.

Recessions are a normal part of the economic cycle. The real question is: Are you prepared to get through one?

“It’s a bit like dripping water torture,” KPMG chief economist Diane Swonk told Bloomberg, as she tried to describe what the Fed is doing to the economy.
