Just when I thought that tax season was over New York State has decided to make it more interesting!!! If you receive a letter from NYS dated April 19, 2019 please take a breath and read it through and then call me. There apparently was a computer glitch that day and letters were sent to many people essentially saying that the refund you already got is all you are getting. In these glitch letters you will see that there is a 0 balance due and 0 refund amount to you. That is your entire refund has already been sent. Call me if you want to verify, or if you get a letter that says anything different, but if you get this one you can relax and ignore it.

I would like to add some clarity to some of the recent news about disappointing tax refunds for the 2018 tax year.

As many of my clients will remember, about this time last year many of you experienced “pay raises”. In fact this was a reduction of the federal tax withholding in your pay check. Fast forward to this year; now, as you calculate your taxes, you may not get the huge refund you were hoping for.

I suggest that you compare the “Total Taxes”, line 15 on your current return, with the “Total Taxes”. Line 39 or 68 on your 2017 return, and in most cases you will notice that this year’s taxes are indeed lower. You will also notice that the “Federal Taxes Withheld on your W-2” is lower. This just means that you took home and had the use of more pay every week instead of saving it up with the government and having them give it back to you at the end of the year.

So far, 95% of my clients have paid LESS tax in 2018 than they did in 2017.

I'm getting ready to hold some workshops/seminars that will help my small business owners prepare for the coming year. I would like to know what YOU really want to know. I'm preparing to explain how the new tax law will affect your personal tax return for the 2018 year. Another workshop i have found helpful is to give you an EASY way to evaluate what your quarterly estimated payments should be for any given quarter. This is particularly helpful for those of us whose income is not evenly distributed throughout the year. Tell me if you would be interested in these topics, or if you have burning questions that you would prefer to have answered!!!

Consumer Alerts on Tax Scams

‪Note that the IRS will never:

Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes.
Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
