From one of the Enrolled Agent organization pages I subscribe to...

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced the administration is “giving individuals and many businesses 90 extra days. Individuals can defer up to $1 million. All you have to do is file your taxes. You’ll automatically not get charged interest and penalties.”

As we go to press, this statement is all we have. Notwithstanding what you may have read, it is *not* guidance, at least as enrolled agents understand the term, though it indicates where Treasury (and therefore we assume, IRS) is going. We expect Treasury and IRS will issue more information soon (though we do not know when—no one does).

To Summarize, this is not legislation or new law yet, just an advisory and the way I read it you still need to file a return or an extension by April 15th to avoid failure-to-file penalties and then you have until July 15th to pay any tax due.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!

I just had my first Buffalo teacher of the year come in for tax preparation and her W2 was missing a VERY important code in Box 14 which is required to correctly prepare the New York State return. It is likely this important code (414H) is missing on all teachers W2's. I will let the Buffalo Board of Education know about this on Monday. This happened at ECMC several years ago and caused 1000's of employees to have to amend their State Return. If self-preparing, call me and I can explain what to do or let your tax preparer know.
