Tax Tip Thursday from us at Elite Taxes and Business Solutions
5 Tax Tips for landscapers:
1. Deduct Business Insurance
If you pay for liability insurance, worker’s compensation, or coverage for your tools and equipment, these premiums are fully tax-deductible. Protecting your business and assets also helps reduce your taxable income.
2. Write Off Training and Certifications
Any costs associated with professional development, such as certifications, licensing, or attending landscaping workshops, are deductible. This includes travel expenses if the training is out of town.
3. Claim Home Office Expenses
If you use a portion of your home exclusively for managing your landscaping business—like scheduling, invoicing, or bookkeeping—you may qualify for the home office deduction. This includes a portion of your rent, utilities, and internet expenses.
4. Deduct Employee or Subcontractor Wages
If you hire employees or subcontractors to help with landscaping jobs, their wages, benefits, and contractor fees are deductible. Be sure to issue 1099 forms for subcontractors who earn $600 or more in a year.
5. Depreciate Large Equipment
Expensive items like riding mowers, trailers, and trucks can be depreciated over time to spread out the deduction. Alternatively, you can take advantage of Section 179 to deduct the entire cost in the year of purchase.
These tips can help landscapers save money on taxes while keeping their businesses financially healthy and compliant!
