With the holiday season in full swing I wanted to give you suggestions on trying to keeping you safe from Cybercrooks. I thought they were very useful so I wanted to pass them on to you.

Here are a few steps taxpayers can take to protect against phishing and other email scams. When reading emails, people should:

1. Be vigilant and skeptical. Never open a link or attachment from an unknown or suspicious source. Even if the email is from a known source, the recipient should approach with caution. Cybercrooks are good at acting like trusted businesses, friends and family. This even includes the IRS and others in the tax business.
2. Double check the email address. Thieves may have compromised a friend’s email address. They might also be spoofing the address with a slight change in text. For example, using [email protected] instead of [email protected]. Merely changing the “m” to an “r” and “n” can trick people.
3. Remember that the IRS doesn't initiate spontaneous contact with taxpayers by email to ask for personal or financial information. This includes asking for information via text messages and social media channels. The IRS does not call taxpayers with aggressive threats of lawsuits or arrests.
4. Not click lick on hyperlinks in suspicious emails. When in doubt, users should not use hyperlinks and go directly to the source’s main web page. They should also remember that no legitimate business or organization will ask for sensitive financial information by email.
5. Use security software to protect against malware and viruses found in phishing emails. Some security software can help identity suspicious websites that are used by cybercriminals.
6. Use strong passwords to protect online accounts. Experts recommend the use of a passphrase, instead of a password, use a minimum of 10 digits, including letters, numbers and special characters.
7. Use multi-factor authentication when offered. Two-factor authentication means that in addition to entering a username and password, the user must enter a security code This code is usually sent as a text to the user’s mobile phone. Even if a thief manages to steal usernames and passwords, it’s unlikely the crook would also have a victim’s phone.
Report phishing scams. Taxpayers can forward suspicious emails to [email protected].

I hope no one is a victim and please pass this on to your friends and/or loved ones.

Happy Holidays to you all,
Jacqueline

It looks like we may be back at 100% now. We are all blessed but our hearts go out to everyone that has been touched by the Woolsey Fire and up north at the Camp Fire (California as a whole).

It has already been stated but I don't think it could be said enough that our First Responders are truly amazing and Angels sent from above. We can't express how thankful we are to the Fire Departments, police, sheriffs, highway patrol, etc for working around the clock to save our City and surrounding Cities. While they can't save everything I think they did an unbelievable job.

We just got internet and phones back thanks (Yeah!) to Spectrum after a week so we appreciate your patience and understanding while we diligently work to get back up to speed. This experience has made me realize how dependent we are on the internet. A big thanks to our AT&T hot spot.

Again thank you and may you all be safe. May you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving and be surrounded with your loved ones.

Blessings to you all,
Jacqueline, Mike, Deanna, Michelle, Cyndi, Jubi and Alyssa
