Do you know how much your employer contributes to your 401(k)?

Many employers contribute additional money toward your retirement based on how much you contribute.

Not all employer matches work the same way. Some match each paycheck, others contribute annually, and some have vesting requirements before the money is fully yours.

It’s worth taking a few minutes to understand how your employer’s retirement match works, especially as you’re reviewing your other benefits during open enrollment.

You could be missing out on free money.

As we work through open enrollment, here’s something about Health Savings Accounts that often gets overlooked: most HSAs allow you to invest the money inside the account.

Unused money rolls over each year. Investment earnings and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are free from federal income tax.

If you can cover current medical bills from other savings, investing your HSA lets you leave money invested for future healthcare costs with the benefit of it growing tax free.

Investments can lose value, so when the money will be needed matters.

Last Monday, I had the opportunity to talk with Cameron teachers during their professional development day about Missouri teacher retirement.

This is something I’m deeply passionate about. With my wife working in education, these decisions directly affect our family.

Over the last month, I’ve spent a lot of time digging into the PSRS system. I wanted to share what I’ve learned so more teachers can understand their options and feel more confident about retirement.
