Owe more to the IRS than you can realistically pay?

An Offer in Compromise may allow an eligible taxpayer to resolve tax debt for less than the full amount. But the size of the balance alone does not determine eligibility. The IRS considers your ability to pay, income, allowable expenses, asset equity, filing compliance, and reasonable collection potential.

Calling the IRS can help you understand the process, but asking on the phone does not submit an offer or guarantee approval. A formal application and supporting financial information are generally required.

Save this before contacting the IRS.

Received unemployment benefits and ended up owing the IRS?

Unemployment compensation is generally taxable for federal purposes, even when no federal income tax was withheld. That can create a surprise balance when the return is filed. It does not make you irresponsible, but the balance still needs a plan.

If you cannot pay in full, ask the IRS about available payment options and an installment agreement based on your current financial situation. The IRS determines eligibility and payment terms using factors such as the amount owed, the collection period, and—when required—your financial information. Interest and applicable penalties generally continue until the balance is paid.

IRS tax debt making you feel like you failed?

A balance with the IRS is a financial issue that needs a plan—not a judgment about your character. IRS payment and resolution options are not one-size-fits-all. Eligibility can depend on filing compliance, income, expenses, assets, balance, and collection stage.

Shame keeps people frozen. Clear information helps them move forward.

IRS LT11 final levy notice in your mail?

An LT11 is serious, but it does not mean the IRS can empty your bank account the day it arrives. It gives notice of a proposed levy and your right to request a Collection Due Process hearing. Check the exact deadline and instructions printed on your letter. A timely request is generally made with Form 12153 and can suspend the proposed levy for the tax periods involved while the hearing and related appeals are pending, subject to exceptions.

The deadline is only one part of the issue. What you raise in the hearing—and the account records behind the notice—can shape the available resolution path.

After checking your deadline, DM me or my team “IRS TRAINING” for the free live webinar details.

IRS letter still unopened in a drawer?

The IRS sends letters for many reasons, including a balance, a return change, an identity-verification request, or missing information. A letter is not automatically a levy, audit, or tax bill.

Open it and locate the CP or LTR number, the reason for the notice, and any printed response date. If the IRS asks for a response, act by that date to help preserve your options and appeal rights.

Opening the letter does not mean you have to solve everything today. It tells you what needs attention.

I explain how IRS notices, deadlines, and next steps work in my free live IRS webinar. DM me or my team “IRS TRAINING” for the details.
