A 0% capital gains tax rate doesn't always mean the move costs you nothing.
Those gains can still count as income for other calculations.
That may affect Social Security taxation, Medicare premiums, or healthcare subsidies.
Sometimes harvesting gains every year makes sense.
Sometimes one larger harvest during an unusually low-income year works better.
Don't optimize one tax rate while ignoring everything it touches.

Delaying Social Security until 70 can do more than increase your future monthly benefit.
It may also create a valuable low-income window before those checks begin.
That could be an opportunity to strategically convert traditional IRA dollars to Roth.
But conversions can also affect Medicare premiums and healthcare subsidies.
Delaying Social Security is one decision.
What you do with the income gap it creates is another.

You just retired and your income suddenly dropped. That could be a valuable tax-planning window.
Before Social Security and RMDs begin, you may have unusually low taxable income.
That can create room for strategic Roth conversions at potentially lower tax rates.
But Medicare premiums and healthcare subsidies need to be considered too.
This window doesn't stay open forever.
Don't just enjoy the lower tax bill—run the numbers while you still have options.

There’s a retirement tax window many people completely miss.

It often happens after your last paycheck—but before Social Security and RMDs add more taxable income.

For some retirees, these years may offer unusually low tax brackets, creating an opportunity to be strategic with:

→ Roth conversions while ordinary income is lower
→ Capital gains harvesting when gains may qualify for a 0% federal rate
→ Reducing future RMDs by shrinking pre-tax retirement balances earlier

Helping your kids financially after 60 can be a wonderful part of your legacy—but it shouldn’t come at the expense of your own retirement.

Gift instead of co-signing when possible. Set a clear limit on how much you’re willing to help each year. Use 529 plans strategically, document family loans, and always run large gifts through your own retirement plan first.

And remember: equal isn’t always fair. One child may need help with a home, another with education, and another may not need financial help at all. Having those conversations now can prevent confusion and resentment later.

Your IRA has to go somewhere eventually—and understanding where it goes can make a big difference in the lifetime tax bill. You can withdraw and spend the money yourself and generally pay income tax on taxable distributions, leave it to a spouse who may have options to continue tax deferral, leave it to children or other non-spouse beneficiaries who are often subject to the 10-year distribution rule, or leave some or all of it to a qualified charity, which can generally receive IRA assets without owing income tax on them. That’s why your IRA beneficiary designation deserves more attention than simply deciding “who gets the money.”

Selling your home doesn't automatically mean you're downsizing your retirement expenses. A smaller home or luxury condo can sometimes increase your monthly costs through HOA fees, insurance, special assessments, and premium location costs. The goal isn't simply buying fewer square feet. It's reducing ongoing expenses, maintenance, and financial complexity while creating more flexibility for retirement. Before making the move, compare your total cost of living, not just the size of the property. Follow for more!
