The Future of Small Business Isn't AI. It's Small Businesses Using AI Better.

One of my biggest takeaways from Xerocon this week:

Technology rarely changes everything overnight.

The speakers noted that while AI is appearing everywhere, we're still in the early stages of seeing its full impact on productivity. Similar to previous technological revolutions, meaningful changes take time to show up across the economy.

What does that mean for small business owners?
✅ Your business isn't becoming obsolete.
✅ Your expertise still matters.
✅ Relationships still matter.
✅ Good financial data matters more than ever.

The businesses that thrive won't be the ones replacing people with AI. They'll be the ones using AI to eliminate busywork so they can spend more time serving customers and making better decisions.

As a Controller and Advisor, I'm excited about how these tools can help small businesses become more efficient while keeping the human element that makes them successful.

🚨 My biggest takeaway from ?
AI is moving from "helpful assistant" to "active team member."
Xero's AI assistant, JAX, is being integrated deeper into workflows to:
✅ Identify missing client documents
✅ Automatically request records via email or text
✅ Send follow-up reminders
✅ Help manage bookkeeping exceptions
✅ Assist with payment collection
For accounting and tax professionals, this could significantly reduce the administrative burden that keeps us from focusing on higher-value client advisory work.
The question isn't whether AI will become part of our firms.
The question is how quickly we'll learn to use it effectively.

Xerocon 2026.
I have missed the past 2 Xerocon events, so this one is even more important. Not only to learn more about current technologies in Xero accounting, but also to hear what the immediate and longer term future holds in our very quickly evolving tech landscape holds, how I will need to plan and adapt, and also how all of this will better serve businesses and my clients. I've been using Xero almost exclusively in my business since 2012, have held most of their various certifications over the years. And now, in past year, they made some changes to their certifications. While not necessarily hard, they do require a good level of working knowledge and keeping current and up to date. The newest (and highest) level so far was recently made available, and I spent most of the day getting it done. Why - because I believe that if I am recommending a system to run a business' accounting on, I had better know all of it.
