Many people leave their old job and start a new one, only to have left their 401k money sitting in their former employer's 401k plan.

Your money isn't lost, but it's worth it for many reasons to grab the money now. While your current employer's 401k plan may allow you to roll your former employer's 401k into it, it might be wiser to open an IRA and roll the money into there.

Why?
- It's fully in your possession (in your own IRA), not in another 401k plan.
- You can have access to more investment options, as opposed to the what's on your employer's 401k investment option menu.

1. money market funds
2. CDs
3. US Treasuries

Nowadays, you can park your cash in an asset that's making 5% interest. This makes much more sense than 0% checking account.
