If you’re funding a Jewish studies program at a university, supporting your synagogue, or giving to another organization that matters to you, give with your heart, but also give smartly.

If you’re retired and taking required minimum distributions (RMDs), a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a strategy you might want to consider.

A QCD allows eligible IRA owners to send funds directly from an IRA to a qualified charitable organization. Those dollars can count toward your RMD, and the amount transferred usually isn’t included in your taxable income.

So, if you were already planning to make a charitable gift, a QCD can allow you to support a cause you care about while making your giving more tax-efficient.

529 plans are a smart vehicle for saving for college, but do you know about superfunding them?

Superfunding a 529 allows you to contribute up to five years’ worth of annual gift tax exclusions at once.

With the current $19,000 annual exclusion, an individual can contribute up to $95,000 per beneficiary, and a married couple can contribute up to $190,000 per beneficiary.

Why is this worth considering?

It can help you accomplish two planning objectives at the same time: fund a child's or grandchild's education and reduce your taxable estate.

Contributing the money up front also gives those assets more time to grow tax-deferred, with qualified education withdrawals available tax-free.

For families with significant assets and long-term education goals, superfunding a 529 can be a useful strategy to discuss as part of a broader financial and estate plan.
