A new division of Fagan & Fagan, LLP offers web design, graphic design, and consultation services. The firm maintains active memberships in a number of civic, business and professional organizations in the Long Beach area, including Professional Business Associates of Long Beach, the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, Food Finders, of which Mr. Richard Fagan serves on the board of directors, and SBN Long Beach, of which Mr. Fagan & Fagan, LLP offers a myriad of accounting, bookkeeping, and consulting services for business and personal finances. When cash feels tight, it's easy to point to inflation, rising oil prices, and slower collections as the culprits.

Those pressures are absolutely there, but in my experience, the owners who feel most squeezed right now aren't solely dealing with a difficult environment.

They're also facing a disconnect between cash flow and bank balance that was there before the environmental pressure ramped up.

Profit and cash aren't the same thing, but when they’re treated that way, it muddies your financial picture.

Distributions are drawn against the profit number as payroll and vendor costs rise. The income statement looks fine, but the balance sheet tells a different story.

External pressures make that gap more painful, but they rarely create it.

These three things are worth doing right now, regardless of what the economy is doing:

— Tighten cash visibility. Weekly tracking, not monthly.

— Protect your margin. Revisit pricing, vendor costs, and any service lines that aren't pulling their weight.

— Control timing. Delay non-essential spend and move on to collecting receivables faster.

The environment is outside your control, but the numbers aren't.
