HER RETIREMENT COLUMN | SEPTEMBER
Are You Within 5 Years of Retirement?
For years, retirement may have felt far away.
Then suddenly you’re 55, 60, 63—and the questions change.
Do I have enough?
When should I take Social Security?
What should I do with my 401(k) when I retire?
How will I replace my paycheck?
What will healthcare actually cost me?
Here’s something I want women to understand:
The five years before retirement can be some of the most important financial years of your life.
This is when retirement stops being just about accumulating money and starts becoming about turning what you’ve accumulated into a plan.
Before you retire, I believe you should be able to answer:
✓ Where will my monthly retirement income come from?
✓ Which accounts will I use first?
✓ How could taxes affect my income?
✓ When does Social Security make sense for me?
✓ What happens to my plan during a major market decline?
✓ What happens financially if my spouse dies first?
You don’t need to know everything about retirement.
But you should understand your retirement.
Joyce’s Question of the Month:
If retirement were five years away, what is the ONE question you’d want answered today?
Put it in the comments. Your question may become the topic of next month’s column.
